They're here! I'm drinking one now - and I can say that this is nothing like Molson Kick.
Firstly it has "Guarana Berry" which gives it a bit of a sweetish beery flavor - like a very smooth shandy. 60 mg of Caffeine per can.
Second it is 6.9% brewed Labatt Blue.
Third it comes in 250 mL "Red Bull" style cans. Bottoms up!
Overall - I like it (more than Kick). The Molson Kick is beer with some Guarana Extract (and I don't even think it's as good a quality as Canadian). |

Beer Review: Labatt Shok, Canada
5/6 First impression. Shok is Labatt's offering in the fast growing caffeinated (guarana) beer market. Shok is a direct rival to Molson Kick with a few key differences. The first pull is remarkable for a surprisingly refreshing berry flavour that is meshed with a clean carbonation zing in the mouth. Honestly this beer has a very nice flavour that is not overly done.
5.5/6 Speed rating. Bombs away. I could drink this in a few microseconds...particularly given the small 250ml can. Yes it has 6.9%abv., but the high etoh content is perfectly blended into the flavour. The small sleek silver can makes this a true speedster in substance and form.
5/6 Intangible. Yes this beer is a gimmick. However I give it high marks because the overall concept is well conceived. IMHO individuals who buy caffeinated beers are looking to stay alert while still enjoying a level of intoxication. These individuals are likely not hard core beer drinkers and thus would favour a more "wine cooler" flavour in a smaller volume package. This is why I think Shok is better conceived than Molson Kick.
5/6 Overall taste quality. This beer reminds me a little of Kawartha Lakes Rasberry Wheat beer (Does this beer still exist?), because the berry flavour does not predominate. Yes the berry taste is present but it is still clearly a beer product. My girlfriend just had a sip at my insistance and commented that the berry flavour was not initially apparent but developed slowly. Overall this is a gimmick beer that I think is much better than Molson Kick.

The guy is 100% on here - but it s much less sweet. This is a low sugar shandy with a high-test Blue and Guarana Berry.
5/5 in my books.
Shok doesn't try to be a beer, like Kick - which isn't that good of a beer. Shok is far superior IMO. |
