FAO All DJs... what sets you aside from the others? (pg. 3)

To be honest, I'm not sure what would make me stand out that much. I have pretty good flow and the ability to play across the board from prog to trance to techno should the need arise, and I can pretty much play any time slot depending on prior/next genres played. Technical abilities are there, of course sometimes a smoke or two is needed to help calm the nerves though as I've only played out a few times (booze is nice but I inevitably end up way too ed, lol.) I play (for the most part) tracks that are not being caned to death, use the third deck if available, rock the eq's quite a bit, and a little chopping here and there, but other than that it's pretty standard really. I just love playing the music loud and for others.

I've been trying to perfect different mixing methods and other tricks, but most of the things I try sound horrid, or just plainly don't work well with 80% of the tracks I play. Hopefully I'll find something that isn't just cloning another dj but still sounds good; unfortunately, I have no ing idea what that is yet:)

I haven't had an oppurtunity to record a demo in quite a while, and I've no place to host old ones, though I'm not content with them anyways...

Well I can play any kind of set for any time of the night, just aslong as I like the music, I do things very different to 95% of todays DJs, I make things interesting, but I think my main thing is if I got a good crowd to work with, I can make them go nuts, and I'm right there with them lookin like a fool, I'm all about see how nuts I can make the crowd get, and I've got them going ballistic many times, my downfall is I can't spin at all if I'm not liking the music, also I can't spin in my room or alone, just no inspiration and is boring as , gimme a crowd to work with.

Also I got BIG balls.

Oh yea, I'm unpredictable.

nice thread stu...

i guess what sets me apart most would be my background...i grew up far away from anything remotely EDM and only really had a chance to get into it when i was 18 and a college freshman at NYU back in 2000. but when i got into it, i put a lot of time and energy to learn about it all. because this is something i love, i never stop trying to gain knowledge about stuff related to it. i've learned about the dance scene from almost every perspective possible and discussed every imaginable topic...from technical issues to creative issues, to drugs being integral to the scene, to djs to promoters, to the mp3 debate to record production to music business, etc. Coupled with a bachelors degree in music tech, 2 years experience at a major US record label, 4 years of spinning...i guess i'm pretty proud of what i've learned and accomplished in the last 5 years.

as for dj'ing, i consider it more a hobby then anything else and just part of my whole fascination with EDM. that said, i count myself extremely lucky that i may be one of the more travelled amateur djs...having played in 3 countries and 5 major cities in a little over a dozen gigs the past 3 years with minimal promotion. i guess why promoters book me is cuz they know i know my . i'm not the most amazing technical DJ, but i understand how a night works, how i'm supposed to play to a club of X people in Y city at a time Z, and why this record should be played now and why that one shouldn't. i take all of this very seriously, but of course not missing the fact that a fun night is what makes all of this so great. people i've worked with know i have a deep passion for this and i guess it helps their confidence that they aren't booking some random dj who plays blindly to a crowd either only for himself or to no one at all.

I havnt been mixing for very long so i havnt fulled formed myself into my own style but im supprised that considering im just about the only person in my area that is into trance and the edm genres alike and iv stuck with it. If anyone in my school said that they like techno they mean klubbheads or darude lol. Sometimes though whem i make a good mix it seems less like just a mix of songs but a blend of emotion and its more of a story than anything. I almost sound like im going to break out in tears and hug everyone :tongue2
Music is my life! :happy2:

plus 1 on a lot of this, i myself am a pretty well traveled dj, and have played decent sized shows in Lima, Bombay, and hopefully ill get a night in Calgary if i can get a demo togteher in time.. not only is most of your post a good definition of you (well written hehe) but a good definition of what a dj should strive to be like.

Just checked out the latest set on your website, got some cool things going on there, a lot of very clever stuff. Gotta agree that it shows originality and kinda defines the point in this thread... Good work :D

This thread has actually probably been more help to me than I will be to it, BUT...

I guess like any other DJ out there who sticks with it, I have a real affinity for the music in general beyond just hearing the notes, I think most DJ's who learn to convey the emotion of their music have at least figured out a key point simply because while I think the crowd definitely feels the emotion of the evening, it's the DJ's job to make that a cohesive, and not manic feeling. Not the easiest thing to do, but definitely not impossible as is illustrated by the many posts preceding this.

The way in which my interpretation of this music known as EDM sets me apart, is to a certain degree, whenever I'm spinning a set (Home, Radio, or Out, admittedly home & radio much more frequently than out) I tell myself a story. This may sound odd, or maybe familiar, to some of you, but I genuinely try to convey a story that I feel I could easily convey in words (without music) to people. Maybe I'm not conveying this idea as well as I want, but the best way I can put it, is on my ETN.fm Rising Stars set (The one with the roughest of errors that I can't believe I let get on the air!) I could basically write a paragraph for the modd/emotion/genuine story elements I was trying to convey in each track, and even how I think the transitions themselves lend to the story...

But who knows, maybe I just think I'm a lot more complex than I actually am, and this is all a bunch of bull since the quality of a DJ is in the eye of the beholder, and maybe you're all the beholders listening and wondering "WTF is this kid on, this is terrrrrrible..."

Peace, Cheers,

RJT
