Saw this on Slashdot, and it made me laugh. Some of the Slashdot reader's comments are priceless too:

But seriously... This is just another example of the US being self proclaimed world police by using their might to push their domestic policies on other sovereign nations to suit their own agendas.
Someone actually suggested that if we defy US wishes, they will embargo Canada just like Cuba. Not that it's likely to happen, but still funny... :stongue: :stongue: :stongue:

P Starrson writes "Slashdot readers may recall that last month Canadian policy makers rejected the DMCA for Canada. Not so fast apparently -- the U.S. Trade Representative has released the annual Section 301 report which each year tells the rest of the world that they need stronger intellectual property protection. This year Canada is a particular target -- the U.S. plans to conduct a special review of Canadian policies and explicitly rejects Canada's rejection of the DMCA. A good summary on what this means from Canadian law professor Michael Geist."

Oh and for those who don't know what the DMCA is:

It's quite far reaching and affects pretty much anything to do with digital media. |

Great comment re: our minority government acting in accordance with the will of the people, or fear a forced election...
As a Canadian... (Score:5, Interesting)

As a Canadian I have to say - "STAY THE OUT OF OUR LAWS."
Granted, as the U.S. is our largest trading partner, we have a number of things that are a little "grey" or messed up... For example, if it was not for the U.S. influence we probably would have legalized pot long ago.
I love the minority government we have right now though - our Prime Minister just denied a number of the White Houses requests because there could have been a forced election if he went against the will of the people. I hope it continues this way - bizzare concept I know - the will of the people driving things?
What is really sad is that much of our law is based on the changes that came about in the U.S. oh, about 200 years ago... (And English law as well) |

Thats bull about the minority government. First off most of the decisions made about iraq etc were made during a majority government. Second, with the tories holding the balance of power it is more likely that an election would be forced if they were to SNUB the US government on certain issues. Even then it's doubtful. The Canadian voting public only has ONE chance to boot out a government based on policies they dont like and thats on election day. This holds true whether or not its a minority or majority government.
Sorry but i cant stand how some people try to equate things that have absolutely nothing to do with each other. |

so are you willing to say that the PC won't turn Canada into a bigger US-whore than they're already?
I'm willing to bet that if the PC was into power he would aprove the DMCA. |

Actually the U.S. here is calling for the implementation of an international treaty - a multilateral action.
In this case, Canada is acting unilaterally - pursuing its own agenda. |

1. Canada is not a democracy.
2. The Lieberals have already sold the soul of Canada... for a cool $100 million (which they have not paid back yet).
3. All the major parties (right across the spectrum) are split on this issue... it's the bureaucrats that are driving the agenda here. |

The DMCA is solely American and has nothing to do with international law. Canada and other countries are free to make their own laws that reflect their domestic interests.
Rather than push the AMERICAN DMCA into the international scene, the US should be working with WIPO on international IP law and commpliance. But of course the US will ignore any international standards organization if their policies are not beneficial to them. The US might say they want Canada to comply with WIPO, but are really trying to force Canada to adopt the US DMCA. |
