Spherical vs Elliptical

what's the difference? i only ask because my carts are on their way out and i'd like to replace them with ortofon nightclubs but i'm not sure whether i should get spherical or elliptical. as i remember, elliptical is meant more for recording as it has high record wear?
Spin Doctor
Spherical holds the groove better, but have a lower sound quality and wear records quicker.

Elliptical styli have a higher sound quality, don’t wear records as fast, but are much more prone to skipping.

I thought it was like this:

Spherical doesn't hold groove as well, has lower sound quality, but doesn't wear the records down as fast.

Eliptical have high sound quality, better tracking, but wear the records much faster, because of it's sharper point.

Elliptical styli are closer to the actual shape of the groove, which is sort of like a V – that’s why they don’t wear records as fast.

Either way i wouldnt let it worry you a great deal... I mean if you are going for ortofons then you can be fair confident that your getting a good cart... Spesh the Nightclubs, Elektros and DJ's...
I personally have the pink scratch cart on my tables and I do a fair bit of scratching but most of the time I just use that most of the time for general mixing

i was under the impression that elipticals DO wear down records faster simply because they do fill more of the groove, there-by creating more surface area and more wear to the overall groove, ans opposed to spericals which only come into contact with a smaller area of the groove.

the way its allways been known to me is. Spericals=less wear/elipticals=slightly better sound quality and slightly better tracking.

yeah, i always thought eliptical wore the records more because of the pointed tip, dig deeper into the plastic.

Although I’m outnumbered here, I’m still standing by what I said.

I’ve got elliptical and spherical carts, and it’s clear with very little use, that the sphericals have better tracking. They also sound much better, and don't hurt your precious vinyl! :D

More expensive though. :(

Yeah, sphericals dont hurt your vinyl, but dont sound as good.

which is why most people reccomend for daily use using sphericals and while recording using elipticals.

if sphericals sounded better, had less wear and better tracking, why would they even manufacture elipticals?

right, good point, it's a tradeoff.

i'm after something for daily use here, and i do spin everything i own, even rare vinyl, so record wear is the determining factor for me.

besides, a spherical nightclub will still sound better than my m35x. :)

no one really needs elipticals, unless you are recording live mixes you need to be PERFECT.

sphericals will suit any bedroom dj's needs.

This is how it is. Use the spherical ones for daily use and if you're going to be doing a mix CD in a nice studio with an awesome mixer and you're worried about maximizing the sound quality then use the ellipticals.

SPHERICAL = less record wear/less sound quality
ELLIPTICAL = more record wear/better sound quality
