I've been looking into it recently, and I'm thinkning of learning to play the mandolin. No, not for bluegrass, probobly for jazz or celtic style music. Has anyone ever learned to play it before? Is it hard to learn?

A beautiful instrument :o Actually, it's my favorite. I hear it alot in IDM pieces. The mandolin and the harp are so ethereal sounding; like a sound that couldn't be created by the hands of man. *edit/ If the price of lessons is anything comparable to that of the Harp, then its expensive. But I think the reaped benefits would be priceless ;) |

| it would be interesting to hear some live mandolin-trance set one day. Maybe a back to back with PvD?:) |

mando is wicked. sounds pretty decent in irish folk, and it's pretty well the same as the fiddle when it comes to tuning and fingering. i play fiddle and mando, used to play in an irish band.. but i really like the mando for ukrainian folk music too. has a pretty distinctive sound.
pick up some traditional folk music books at a music store or something... Ossian puts out some good books/series starting at intro level right up to advanced (usually in the same book). it's a nice instrument too cause it's small and self-contained, pretty portable, and it's relatively easy to pick up the basics and sound like you know what you're doing quite quickly.

don't know about pvd, but yeh, that would be pretty cool. ATB had some remix of 9pm or whatever with some stylized mando-sounding samples in it a few years back... |

Hey! Koss. As far as lessons, I've looked around in my area. It seems that anyone who plays geetar, teaches the mandolin as well. How similar are they ? |
