It's a nail in the coffin... |
she won by 600 something votes and only because she was a conservative. My dad voted liberal last time because he couldnt stand stronach personally. It had little to do with what was happening federally according to him. |

Like i said, judging on the reaction around here from people on my street and seeing interviews on CKVR i think there are a lot more pissed off newmarket-aurora constituents at this point. |
I'll presume you have a better read on the situation then I do as you are there, however, I would caution you to remember that the minority is always more vocal... generally speaking, there will be a lot of people that are silently happy whereas the majority of the disenters will be vocal. |

don't underestimate the # of people who will vote for her due to her newfound position...
(I'm not saying that's a good thing). |

| martha hall findlay had much more respect than stronach did yet findlay lost. That tells me a lot about then and now. |

What many forget is that amongst the votes she received last time were votes for her as a person rather then due to her party affiliation. It stands to reason that she will take many of those votes with her into the next election as well as a large number of the former Liberal candidate's votes (I cannot recall her name) as she is publically supporting Belinda.
That being said, if Martin really views her as a star candidate he may be well served to move her to a safer riding. |

| a lot of people will vote for a cabinet minister just for the perceived advantage of having a power broker represent you... it is rare that cabinet ministers lose their seats (it does happen mind you). |

More people voted against her as a person i think. The stronachs are not viewed favourably upon around here. They are seen as a bunch of elitist opportunists. The only people i notice that support her as a person in large numbers are middle aged soccer moms oddly enough. |

my thoughts exactly.
although she'd also be busier with larger matters as a minister...I suspect constituents may feel that their own riding's interests will be better served with a minister as their MP rather than a "mere" backbencher.
Harper will need a star candidate of his own to run against her, I would think (assuming, as you noted, that she even runs in that riding again). |

good for you for sending it (even though I'd be writing a letter congratulating her for leaving Harper's incompetent leadership behind).
|
I suppose Martin was a competent leader when hundreds of millions of dollars were wasted on his watch (as finance minister and political minister for Quebec)? |

Martin's failings are inmaterial when discussing Harper's failings. Nice dig though, way to keep your agenda out there! |

As the leader of the official government-in-waiting, and the only electoral alternative available as a pracatical matter, Martin's failings are abosolutely material when discussing Harper. |

Only if the two are being contrasted, Mark was not contrasting them he was simply pointing out a failing in Harper's leadership abilities. Personally, I do not see this as a failing in Harper's ability to lead. In order to keep Belinda happy he would have had to move the CPC more toward the centre, unfortunately, that would upset the grassroots supporters of the party. On balance, pissing off a rookie MP is not quite as damaging to the internal party structure as pissing off 50,000 party loyalists (just pulling a number out of my ass I have nothing to back that up). If there is any failing here it is limited to the timing that he lost control of Stronach, however, I would suspect that has more to do with Belinda choosing the best possible timing for herself rather then anything Harper did or did not do. |
