Tips for telephone interviews?
View this Thread in Original format

Im trying to get a full-time summer job just now and i've been applying mainly for call centre ones. I had my first ever telephone interview a couple of days ago and was unsuccesful - i think its probably cos i hesitated quite a bit when the dude asked me a question about a situation i'd never been in before, so i had to quickly make something up.

I've got another one in a couple of days so can anyone who has a lot of experience with this give me a few pointers? Common questions (for a call centre job) would be useful too.

Cheers

i think the bigger question here is, why on earth would u want to work in a call centre?

try and use a presentable tone for ur voice, any1 mumbling will be rejected. If you have a strong accent then try and tone that down as much as possible. I think these are major points for call centre jobs. As for the questions i would say they wouldnt be too different from a normal job interview.

hmm common questions .. id guess at them asking you to tell them about how you dealt with certain situations in the past perhaps whilst on a call .. say how you dealt with an angry customer? otherwise im not sure .. try google

Well there's nothing else i really wanna do and i dont mind sitting about answering calls all day - easy job. Also, the wages are a hell of a lot better than most other jobs - Just now im earning £5.00 an hour at safeway and most of the call centre jobs i apploed for start at about £6.50+

DRM, yeh im gonna try and be enthusiastic next time. For my last interview the guy didnt tell me exactly what time he was gonna call me and i was in bed when he did lol, so that probably didnt help.

To annoy everyone in the western civilisation to death trying to sell double glazing while you're trying to eat dinner and watch the news of course! :D

james left his phone on ready the other day. and our teams phones are all networked, so if u press **3, u can intercept anyone elses call. and i was busy, and no1 else was on our section, just me, and it rang, and rang, and rang, and ing rang. for well over 2 mins. i didnt wana take it, so i did **3, picked the handset up, and slammed it back down again! lol.

haha I was thinking that.

I'd say you're right about the silence. Just talk without thinking about it, it's what I do :D

edit: something a bit more constructive; remember you're not face to face so you have to bring out as much of your personality as possible in your voice. Exaggerating tones works well on the phone. I wouldn't worry about toning down regional accents unless they're particularly strong (Northern accents are actually a bonus as they're percieved as friendlier).
