| Shame that we forgot Children. A truly classic track. |

Underworld - Cowgirl :D
This song got me into electronica, and then I discovered trance. |

No. the anthems are usually the biggest tracks in a set, like the closer, occasionally the openers... they're like classics, but unlike classics, anthems can be cheesy..
they tend to get the crowd moving
they tend to be that one of that dj's "when all else fails" tracks, to steal from seb fontaine:rolleyes:
some djs and a lot of bedroom djs just pump out nothing BUT anthems, and ive heard magik 6 described in its worse light as "just a bunch of anthems"
but i would beg to differ...
undisputed anthems on that cd imo...
yahel - voyage
delerium - silence (tiesto mix)
moogwai - viola (armin mix)
you could say a few others perhaps, but those are pretty much "obvious tracks that everyone knows."
hope its a little clearer for you now:cool: |

An entire set filled with anthems will end up boring the people too. That's what works for me. However I'm a prog Dj(that spins a trance set on very rare occasions)so my views on a set that works might not apply to you. |
even so in this case (i agree) there are still prog anthems..
bedrock - heaven scent.. sander k - my lexicon... sasha - xpander
etc |

Patticus, same rule applies in progressive. Don't play anthem after anthem, or you'll end up regretting it in the end. there are enough quality trance and progressive tracks out to keep your set interesting and just use the anthems to reward the crowd, if they give you support and love(sounds lame huh :D ). However use them wisely.
And yeah, those tracks are definitely corkers. I love 'em. |

My extremely generalized analogy of what defines an anthem:
The two or three songs you will play at some point in the night, and the crowd* will probably leave happy - regardless of how or what you played for the entire set.
You could play those incredible new tunes you bought that afternoon or just #@$%&! all night long, but throw on Cafe del Mar, Meet Her at the Love Parade or Silence and you will have defined the night, as far as they're concerned.
*Assuming it's a mainstream crowd, not the type of crowd that could probably quote the remixer, label, BPMs, etc. of every song... (people like us). |

Hope you guys haven't forgotten about BT - Flaming June...
Or maybe Jan Johnston - Flesh, which BT also produced. :)

What about the only electronica (which subcategory is this one? House, right? Guess who isn't a DJ...) song that they play on (at least our...) crappy, cheesy, full of Backstreet Boys, Pop station?
Darude - Sandstorm
Or are we not going THAT FAR.... |

I can understand how playing anthems all night in a DJing situation could be a bad idea, but what about when making compilations (like Magik6)?
I live in a region where there are very few trancers and clubbers, and for the past few years have compiled techno/trance cd's to "spread the goodness".
Anyways, Politics of Dancing by PvD comes to mind where anthems were spread out and scarce. I played it to a non-trancy friend, who quickly got bored with it from the beginning and lost so much interest that when the "anthem" type tracks came on (example, Epic Monolith) he didn't really care. However, his interest in a compilation of mine (aka anthem fest) was much better. Have I had not heard those tracks (on the PvD cd's) before, I could see my own reaction being the same. |

LOL..that is pretty far :)
Could Sandstorm even be considered trance???
It should be an anthem in a nightclub sence...but in my room it really doesn't hold up to For An Angel or Binary Finary. When I first heard Sandstorm it drove me crazy anyways. |
