I was wondering if anyone knows of any music production courses.
I dont wanna go out and spend thousands maybe just a short course for a few weeks/months that will teach me some basics about the producing side of things. I know i can teach myself but i dont want to take any shortcuts, id rather learn from scratch.
If anyone has done one of these courses some feedback would be good.

| i was never under the impression there were any 'how to produce music' courses.. there are sound engineering courses i do know that.. if there were any 'production' courses, i suppose they would be lame and an attempt for some local hero to swipe money off innocent people teaching them stuff they could teach themselves.. especially considering you want it to be over in a couple of weeks/months. |

my sentiments are aligned with dave's though not as crudely haha
having browsed around, there are two private institutes that exist.
JMC Academy in South Melbourne (Bank St) and SAE down Normanby Road at South Yarra. Both offer Audio Engineering, however, the courses cost an arm and a leg. I took a tour of SAE and jesus, the facilities are impressive, however, at something like $12,000 for a 9 month full time course - I came to the conclusion, that these institutes were taking advantage of those who wanted to immerse in an already overpopulated industry of more supply than demand. Moreover, if you're only interested in music production of the electronic variety, you definitely won't make use of all the facilities that these places have to offer. A waste of moolah really.
SAE though, have just released a relatively new course, that's still undergoing syllabus changes. It is the Electronic Music Production course. 6 months part time with a cost of ~$3500. This is probably
more tailored to what you want. I glanced at the syllabus while on the tour, and from what I remember it looked really appealing. From basic track construction, to sound design, to considering sound acoustics for your set up. but $4000 is a lot of money. You can buy a mac, and a copy of logic 7 for less than that at an educational pricing. hehe.
Others?
Jono Fernandez provides one-on-one tuition for logic at $200 per hour :) I think Revolver also provide some short courses. Ivan Gough and Mark Highland do one off courses every now and then. For other Audio Engineering Certificate IV courses at a more rational cost, check out Box Hill Tafe or RMIT.
It's probably more worth while sitting down and having a look at the resources available on the Internet. Forums sites, resources from other producers etc. All the information is to avail. It's just a question of how much effort you'd like to put in, or how much you would like to be spoon fed :)
Good luck with whatever you decide to do
edit: one more thing. most people i've been acquainted with who've enrolled in SAE have said that you're better off saving for equipment and suscribing to some good music resources/magazines. hope that helps |

Indeed. Or have a look at some of the training DVDs out there. I cant handle reading large bodies of text myself, watching someone demonstrate it is so much easier. |

ive been reading up on SAE. seems very good but the price is just too much. I dont like reading huge slabs of text myself, might check out the shorter course that is available. jono fernandez must be raking it in at that price!

yeah i know a coupla guys whove done some of these courses...they'll teach you heaps about microphones.
im usre there are some good courses around, but yer, the best way seems to be to teach yourself + internet + books + mates.
just get some more piano lessons imho.
although im sure jono's 200 dollar an hour course would be good (if you have a spare 400 dollars a week) |
