ive been participating in the CORe for a while and now that ive finished what i think is my best song to date, it is time for me to have some deeper purpose here!
lets see... some background on me...
im 16
been composing for approx 5 years
played the string/electric bass for 7 years
i use FL 3 because i dont have a job... ive had that baby from the start :p
yeah. good enough for now...
for the song(s)
=======> http://www.purevolume.com/pacificmint <========
is my purevolume site... the one that i was referring to is called
"a day in the life"
i have my own sound (started writing before i knew what edm was) and i usually just sit down and bang out some melodies then later come back and add background/drums/fx/eq it. im only just starting to get comfortable w/ composition, though.
also i think i should say that i dont know much about these "plugins you speak of but i think its time to educate myself... no i use basic sounds and the plugins i use are 3xOSC, SimSynth, and TS404. listen to the WHOLE thing
and please... dumb down your criticism for me
thx

Well, I listened to your tracks and don't take this the wrong way...but I was HIGHLY DISSAPOINTED. I mean, the way you projected yourself, I thought you were going to have some banging tunes. All I hear is Fruityish sound. Still, I wish I knew about producing when I was your age. I just learned about it like 2 years ago and I still have a long way to go before I sound pro...no time, man, no time. :) |

Your tracks need a lot of work, but hang round and I'm sure you'll pick up some pointers =) |

Hey. You said dumb down my criticism but I dont really need to for these. While the instruments you used are complete and total and combined with the lack of effects, I can see why so many people arent appreciating these songs. But, I've spent enough time around music and especially GM (general MIDI) that these really arent that bad. Though, there is a bit too strong of a hip-hop influence on many of them to be Trance or Progressive or House. What I do hear though, is some great melodies that bare a striking resemblence to New Age music and a little like early to mid 90s House. If you wanted to, I'd like to work with you on updating some of these tracks and making them trancier/housier because honestly, most of the elements are there, its just the quality of the instruments :). Drop me a line if youre interested in collabbing with me or atleast letting me remix your songs :). (BTW, your best is actually Climax Zone ;))
Cheers,

i dont think you are that bad at production per se (although, you it would help to practice on mastering and equalization), i just dont think your tracks are that creative. the melodies are a bit unoriginal and unimaginative, at least compared how you present yourself and your music.
Its riding a bit on the egotistical side. just stuff like "Pacific Mint is an exploration of my mind and my ideas.". That may be true, but there isnt much creative-self in the tracks. I think that when beginning to produce, people make all kinds of tracks of that caliber. i mean, you just dont have a "composing for 5 years" type of sound. i can even pick out what FL internal plugins you used. just mabye be a bit more modest when presenting yourself. it could save you much the almost defencful reactions that have (somewhat) been put forward. ive been producing for just under two years now, and have several people interested in some of my stuff (mostly local), and things are starting to look alright for me right now (as opposed to making music in your bedroom for 7 hours a day...). my point is, just be a bit more modest about your music, keep a bit more of a low profile and spend more creative time on it, and keep alot of outside influences away. you can start putting your music out there, along side the confident attitude, once you have really started to get your own sound. keep doing what your doing, things will come to you, and you will eventually have a style to call your own. i mean, a positive attitude is always good, but know when to portray yourself that way, and when not to.
ps. everytime i write something this long, i always tend to drone on like mad. feel free to completely overlook it all. i guess that...renders...what...ive

Yeah, you said what I wanted to say but just reserved it, hehe.
Anyway, to the thread starter, you have to be mellow. I mean, when I started 2 years ago, my stuff sounded 100 times worse than yours...and I'm learning now and gotten a bit better. Most guys here have all the time in the world...I barely spend time in my apartment...hell...I'm at work right now and it's almost midnight. Anyway, it's all about being humble...you underestimate yourself and people actually give you props for your music. You overpresent yourself, it's gonna go downhill. |
