But you see the trick to being a popular dj (which is no different than becoming a top 40 hit) is that you play for any crowd and not just a specific type.
IMO a true artist creates and sticks to his own style....and doesn't mimic others. But then, he is a resident Guv dj...and he does it well.
As for Greg... I agree with you. Da man has talent. And I was even more impressed when he pulled out an old old old lp on a boat cruise I was at. If he can lay that one down and have ppl saying wow...then that impresses me.
Peace :toocool: |
Thats the thing... I know what mark plays when he's playing his exact style. Sometimes he has to play to the crowd and when it's a trance dj guest his style is much different from when its say Eric Morillo. There are times mark plays stuff i dont like too (and for that matter, stuff he doesnt like) but thats what happens when you have 9 hours and 4000 people to please. I dont judge DJs soley on the tunes that are played. Yes that plays a huge part in it but im more about technique and programming when it comes to judging. For example im not the biggest fan of uplifting trance but i can certainly tell a good trance dj from a bad one.
You may call crowd pleasing "selling out" or "not having a unique style" but some DJs forget that the reason they are there is to please the crowd beyong pleasing themselves. If there is anything i hate the most it's a DJ who just comes in and plays his preplanned set and leaves without a hint of evidence of reading the crowd. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. Ive worked with mark and seen some of the crowds he has had to deal with and watched him read the crowd and test a few things to get them going. Sometimes what works with the crowd is stuff that makes me roll my eyes. Other times he bangs out the best sets ever. 98% of the time though no matter what he plays its played with skill and technique and ive seen the toughest crowds go from lacklustre to ape when hes been playing. And that to me is what makes a good dj.
PS: i know Greg Gow's cousin really well and shes a damn fine hottie...... Just thought i should add that LOL |
