the original russian thread? I am ignorant of what you are referring to.
My selection of films while heavily weighted towards russian cinema (Lekce Faust is Czech I believe) not because I am russian (which I am not) but because of the three layers of story... literal/symbolic/archetypal
American film's emphasis seems to be on telling compelling literal stories. While Russian films tend to emphasize archetypal.
Utomlyonnye solntsem, for example (as you've seen this one), tells an interesting literal tale (love, power, family), at the same time it tells an interesting symbolic tale (i.e. russia's experience with Stalinism), but for me the real interest is in the archetypal tale (i.e. The Fire Balls) |
