I must say... I'm not really a fan of any of your tracks, Wim. They all have top-notch production value, but lack any sense of originality. They're all completely stereotypical trance with mediocre melodies.
If you tried to implement some of your own ideas into the productions, or attempted to develop your own original sound, I bet you could really make something great.
Don't get me wrong... none of my tracks where Tune of the Week on ASOT... but I feel that once you get past the production quality, your tracks have nothing going for them.
A good analogy... If I where to listen to one of your tracks in a set, your track would not stand out at all because they all have a minimal amount of defining characteristics. |
Hm we've read this before. Every track Wim's made is in the Wim style, it's very recognizable, so one part of what you are saying is just not true.
The fact he is 'less original' of 'stereotypical' is his choise, he just likes to use a lot of sounds he is used to use. Don't blame him! You know this instrument: piano? Now that's a sound which is over used and not original anymore... Right. This explains why your post doesn't make sense. |

you're of course entitled to your own opinion, but it's always dangerous to generalize this for everybody else - it's not a very assertive way of thinking. As long as some people like my work, I will carry on with it. Doing what you like to do most is still most important. I'm not a classical composer with a huge sense for amazing melodies, I just like to figure out what 'works' and what won't.
Now tell me, what tracks in the current trance scene - where almost everybody tries the same 'ASOT sound' (which is already becoming a genre onto itself) - would you call original? :) |

| Both tracks sound good to me. Keep up the good work. |

Wim: Perhaps it's more that most of your tracks sound very much alike. Your music doesn't seem to progress at all. From track to track... each sounds the same as the last. Like stag-flation, this is the worst kind of growth.
While I've always felt that melody was the best way to achieve individuality, if you can't do that.. try putting more time into your productions through the use of advanced effects techniques and edits.
Just trying to help as it seems not many people on TA can get past the production quality of a track ;) The all-to-common compliment of "Nice Track, Keep up the good work" has never helped ME at all... |

Alan:
if you listen to what I made 2 years ago, and look at tracks I made now, you'll see a difference. Both these two 'The elemental' tracks are from during 2003, as well as 'Astra' and 'Sintra', which have only been released until now. Even 'Sorrow' has had updates since end 2003. Of course, if people have followed me since back then, you would kinda come to that conclusion...
You could also think of it this way: if I keep the sounds to work with, must mean I really like them, no? :)
It's always nice for people to sort of 'recognize' my sound in the scene. If all of your tracks sounds a whole lot different each time on, it'd be I think like you're not finding a sound for yourself. It might also be confusing for other people. Personally, I thought it always was great to hear a certain sound and say, isn't this '...' etc.
Then again, if labels ask for a production of yours, they will also 'expect' a certain type of sound. You can't always divert 180° from what you're doing if you're bound to some expectations.
In the end, it's nice you're trying to help, but this has been talked about too much I think... If I'm still not 'changing' too much after all these 'helpful' replies, that does have to mean something. |

A round of applause to tranceland's newest hero! Blowing us away with his inimitable style time after time! Wim, for a change just make a really crap quality tune to show us all you are human and not just a tune generator ;-)!
Keep up the monumental work laddie! |

Not wanting to start a fight or anything... but to be original these days is virtually impossible in a track! There are that many producers out there that everything as been done! You can nit pick at any track but rather than do that enjoy the music for what it is! |
