hello Socal TA's, I'm moving from Wisconsin to LA in a couple weeks and haven't found an apartment yet. can anyone suggest good neighborhoods/blocks in the LA area?
I don't want to end up in a shady or "not-fun" area. anything anyone can tell me would be greatly appreaciated! |

| the first question is how much $$$ you willing to spend per month? |

| i suppose btwn $500 and $800. i mean, i'm not going to have a ton of money, but i don't wanna live in a rat trap |

for an apartment or to have a roommate? $500-800 is not alot for an apartment at all. Apartments in Panaorama city, North Hollywood, and maybe Van Nuys would fit that budget. i believe fit that range.
Living in those areas COULD be considered shady...depends on what shady is, but fun? everything in LA is fun :D Remember it's LA. Prices not nowhere the same as in WI. Also is there a reason you coming down? job or school? Don't want to live toooo far from that cuz you'll learn about traffic and gas!
If you are not going to have alot of cash... a roommate would be the best way to go. You'll have a better chance in being in a area that you would like. |

i'm interning at a prod company called Content Film, which is in Hollywood on Wilcox. but I also need to find a job that pays the bills as its an unpaid internship, and I don't know where I'll be working for my second job.
i'd be looking for a 2 bedroom, and I'd like to pay btwn 500-800, so i guess between 1000 and 1600 for a 2 bed.
my roomate says that she's heard that santa monica is a fun place to live, and by fun I mean a young crowd that likes to party :D . but that's, what, a 30 min commute from santa monica to hollywood? |

yeah about that much, but an apartment even with a roommate in santa monica is going to be more than $600 minimum...won't give you much cash to live on, plus gas here is expensive
also you have to consider, are you bringing a car from wisconsin, or are you going to have to buy a car here, cuz you won't be able to get anywhere without it...buying a car will automatically put you in the hole a couple of grand... |

+1 no car=no where to go... Oh and to let you know... if you work in Hollywood in the morning.. you will have to get up VERY EARLY. traffic a bitch both on and off the freeways.
and you might want to start looking for that job right now.... The job market can be good, just sometimes it takes time to look for a good one. MickeyD's is not going to cut it to make around $1400-1600 per month. which would have to be the minium if you are going to be spending $650-800 on an a place. |

i am driving a car out from wisconsin, and I'm going to keep it registered here too, b/c i heard that its redankulous expensive out in cali.
w/ regards to job, a lot of places i've checked out want you to apply in person, so that pretty much makes it impossible for me to look around now. however, my friend works at a place called Blowfish Sushi on sunset, and he said he might be able to get me a job there.
also, just so I know, off street parking is a must, right?
its all so exciting, but stressful too...:eyes:
thanks for all your help! |

| in hollywood? pretty much. Apartments depends on the complex. |

| Are you okay with commuting? By commuting I mean sitting in ungodly traffic for about an hour. Torrance is a pretty nice place to live, and has apartments in that range with two bedrooms as far as I know. Lots of businesses here too so I'm sure you could find a decent job. |

If you decide to live in the San Fernando Valley then you might want to consider taking the Metro Redline which starts in North Hollywood with many stops in the Hollywood area. It cost 1.25 one way or you can buy a pass(dont know how much for that though). Here are the routes for the Metro . So really you can live anywhere near the Metro lines to get to work(if possible). Check Craigslist for places too once you figured out what area you want to live in.
I'm sorry if the info I have given is exactly what you wanted but its something to consider(with the cost of gas). Once you make enough $$ you can move somewhere else. |
