Yesterday I witnessed my first head on collision

and it was close
I was coming back work around 7pm pretty tired at a major intersection in toronto at davenport road. A white sedan driven by 3 young guys in their 20's went fast and carrelessly through red light and crashed into a big ass oncoming suv occupied by 2 mid age women. It was a huge crash but it gets more interesting.
Sedan was almost completelly obliterated from the front while suv had only a minor dent :disbelief . Gasoline was strewn everywhere and I suspected an explosion was coming up next. Surprisingly they all survived :eyespop: . But one of the guys tried to flee the scene and went right by me.
It was quick and I didn't realize what happened. From my side of view I could clearly see 2 women and they were very calm but had obvious bruises on them and one of them was bleeding from the head but not profusely. Police was there in minutes and they quickly cuffed up 2 guys in the car and went on a chase for the other one  . I guess they figured they were drunk or something quickly.
The guy was an easy catch, with ripped shirt and all short and stocky. After that , I am not sure what happened. All I know is that it stopped traffic in the area for entire night. I guess I have to search somewhere else to know what happened in front of my eyes |

Don't anybody friggin dare for a second think that big SUVs are safe. They don't have crumple zones. The car did. That's why it was obliterated. That's why, at that speed, they lived.
I'd much rather my car be destroyed from the bumper to the firewall than a minor dent in a head-on collision. Near-instant deceleration tends to rupture internal organs, while at least the crumple zone in a well-designed car will help to prevent it being so sudden. |

Or maybe the car was obliterated because it was japanese-made
ZING!!
Honestly those cars are made of plastic. I saw a wreck on saturday - a civic was making a left turn and a buick plowed right into the shotgun door. The civic was totally mushed up, so much i'd bet a G there's frame damage, and the buick only had slight crumpling on his right headlight. The contrast was high-larious. |

take any APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) with average six people inside, let it hit the concrete wall = six dead people and undamaged APC.
the point is that car supposed to consume the energy from hit, otherwise - its a "coffin on the wheels" |

Hello have you driven a modern domestic car lately? More plastic than the Japanese cars. |

I prefer my 4000 lb mass of American steel and it's 6 foot hood.
If I rear end someone...I'm no where near the actual accident  :tongue3  :tongue3 |

Witnessing big accident is scary!
as for jap cars made of plastic...ok, maybe the bumper(cover) is made from polyurathane but so is every other car...and under neath that it metal. They have to pass saftey tests and usually do quite well where SUVs DONT. Sure an suv vs car..the suv has more mass and inertia so it usually comes out better..but put up suv vs suv or another comparable sized car (or truck) and your f*cked. Id rather be in the car that crumples up properly. With most cars they are designed to crumple in certain ways to try and take most of the energy instead of it being absorbed by the occupants. Where as most if not all suv's dont have any of that incorporated in the design(yes they would benefit /need it).
obviously cars arent made from plastic. the cosmetic stuff may be but cosmetic metal doesnt provide much if anything for structure rigidity over plastic. Its whats underneath that counts and all cars are made from metal  |

One night after system, (adam freeland and infusion), we were driving a friend of ours back to York University. We stop at a red light, we're all sketched to , we're in a crowded car (4 in the back 2 in the front, a cavalier), and we see that this car is coming down the opposite side NOT slowing down. My friend stef goes "He's gonna run the red" and BOOM, a collision right in front of us, and then both cars flew on either side of us, but non hit us. They literally came inches away from smoking the car we were in.
We all sat there, jaws to the floor, in absolute shock and utter silence for what musta been 2 minutes. SCARY SCARY .
Here's a diagram I drew up so you can visualize.
