Hi,
Anybody here who could give a clear explanation/overview of all the different genres and sub-genres in current dance music, cause sometimes even I get confused. Also, when explaining a style, also put a link or something to audio demos of typical songs in that (sub-)genre. Astralmusic.com has lots of audio streams that you can link to.
Maybe make this thread a sticky as a reference of music styles?!
Also some specific questions from me:
1/ what exactly is "deep" house and "deep" trance. Is "deep house" either more dark or more relaxing, loungy, chilly, like what kind of style is thing remix: http://www.astralmusic.com//ItemMul...019163_2_02.wvx Would it be ok to call this "deep house" or what?! It's a rather relaxing tune, kinda loungy, is this what "deep house" stands for?
2/ what do they mean with "progressive" trance/house. Is this a reference to the fact that the tune builds up? Or does this refer to "darker" trance? Or is it just an indication to say it is more experimental then classic trance?! It seems everything is progressive these days, so what IS "progressive"?!
3/ how come so many people say that "trance" is a sub-genre of "techno". Isn't it so that the roots of (melodic) trance is the synthesizer music of Vangelis etc.. (that's what people like Ferry Corsten etc.. also say in interviews I believe). So why do people say it's a sub-genre of techno?! Anybody could explain this please?
I hope everybody with good knowledge about this can contribute to this thread! Thanks! :) |

Progressive isn't anything. Progressive house is not "house that does X" it's merely progressive house. Progressive isn't an adjective, like "hard house" or "epic trance", it's just a title. Prog is prog, and if you try and define it you don't know what it is. Deep house is house that is deep. Simple.
You know, the titles of styles should fit round the music, not the other way round. |

| Is the audio link I posted above (in specific question 1) "deep house"?! Can deep house still have a beat, be clubby or is it normal without any 4/4 beats (more like ambient, chillout)? I wonder if most people expect chillout to be with or without beats?! |

Haha, Young Parisians - Jump the Next Train is definitely not "deep house." My understanding of deep house is that it is house music mainly created with real instruments, and many of the deep house tracks I've heard have jazz elements to them, but I don't know if that is a defining characteristic of all deep house tracks. There is a deep house thread from a month or two ago, why don't you try and search for that. It's very informative. |

if you listen you will hear it's a remix of "Jump the next train" (Probspot remix), so is this deep house or maybe deep trance?! Isn't it so that deep trance is considered dark, which this remix is definitely not.
Also, try to explain "progressive trance" (with some audio link maybe). |

ing hell. Progressive trance is trance that isn't another type of trance. If it isn't:
Epic
Vocal
Uplifting
Anthem
Hard
Psy
Goa
Acid
Classic
Or any other "...trance" it's progressive. |

personally i think electronic music is so different to typical genre's ie rap, classical, punk rock etc. You cant put a name to songs that are so unique and artificial, its an experience more then any other 'genre' can provide, sure there is many different types of Electronic music it needs some sort of sorting out, but the way each (well most) songs are so different, each song would need its own genre! so i say lets keep it simple! not "wow this song sorta makes me feel young and happy its uplifting but it has harsh synths so umm its uplifting dark death trance..."
i say death to anything other then the basics
-Trance
-Hard Trance (higher rpm more of an impact
house <-- a confusing one some people call dj alligator hard house where i call dj alligator 'horse '
-jungle
-DNB
etc, all these sub genres, are pointless! as above stated, each song is different, But having said that we do need names for styles but not to many! i say we make an official TA Genre system voted in! |
