John stuart mill was born in 1806, and between the ages of 3 and 14 he was the object of a rigorous educational experiment imposed upon him by his father, James Mill. So intense was this personal tutoring in the classics, languages, and history, that he said that "through the training bestowed on my by my father, i started, i may fairly say, with anadvantage of a quarter of a century over my contemporaries".
