TORONTO (CP) - With less than two weeks until the Live 8 worldwide concert extravaganza, plans were finally unveiled Tuesday for Canada's version of the event, which will include performances by homegrown acts like Bryan Adams, Tragically Hip and the Barenaked Ladies.

Event organizer Bob Geldof hopes the July 2 shows will pressure world leaders from the wealthy G8 nations to increase aid to Africa when they meet in Edinburgh next month.
On Tuesday, he had stern words for Prime Minister Paul Martin.
"There's no use your prime minister coming to Scotland unless he's prepared to do this deal. If he's not prepared, stay at home, just stay at home, don't come," Geldof said in a pre-taped message played at a news conference.
Afterwards, speaking over the phone from Rome, the Boomtown Rats frontman explained that it was time to bully Martin because "we're coming to the wire now."
"The world is broken and it's political fracture. Live 8 will be the splint, hopefully, that joins it. In order to make that work, the Canadian prime minister must come to this with a completely open mind," he said.
"We don't have the time now for niceties . . . What is the point of coming to a G8 if you're not prepared to go along with the agenda?"
Geldof noted that of the group of leading industrialized countries, Canada is the only government in budgetary surplus.
That said, Canada's show in Barrie, Ont., about an hour's drive north of Toronto, was a late addition to Live 8.
It's also going to be the smallest show. The chosen venue can handle a capacity crowd of 35,000 compared to the one million expected in Philadelphia or 300,000 in London.
Those gigs are set to feature some of the biggest names in music, including U2, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Coldplay and Sting.
Canada's edition of the international bash, which Geldof is calling the "greatest cultural event of our culture," will also feature a satellite performance by Celine Dion from Las Vegas and on-site performances by Gordon Lightfoot, Motley Crue, Great Big Sea, Blue Rodeo, Simple Plan and Our Lady Peace.
Geldof said he wanted Canada on board from the beginning but just couldn't get here to help organize.
Instead, he enlisted his friend, Toronto concert magnate Michael Cohl, whom Geldof met 30 years ago when Cohl organized gigs for the Boomtown Rats.
The pair's initial conversations were about scheduling Cohl's clients - The Rolling Stones - at the London Live 8 gig.
"It wasn't about Canada, but then Canada evolved out of those conversations. It was like my responsibility for not delivering the Stones (in London)."
Cohl hinted that "two to three more" major acts would be announced for the Canadian show in the coming days, although he stressed the Stones would not be one of them.
Although the 1985 Live Aid shows organized by Geldof raised $40 million US for African famine relief, the Live 8 concerts will be free.
Geldof said they are intended to raise awareness and turn up the "heat" on politicians.
In the House of Commons on Tuesday, Martin responded to Geldof's remarks by saying: "I am not going to make a commitment that I am not sure the government will be able to keep."
The Canadian show - to be hosted by comedian Tom Green and actor Dan Aykroyd - will begin at 11 a.m. and run until about 8 p.m.
Tickets will become available online Thursday at 10 a.m. Those wishing to attend will have to earn the free tickets by answering a quiz question.
The other shows will be held in Paris, Berlin, Rome, Tokyo and Johannesburg

Btw Geldolf can off. Basically he wants leaders to do what he wants without question. That is not how things work buddy... Its the leaders that make the agenda. Thats what the G8 is for.

sounds like it was thrown together last minute, lol.
while ticket sales may be weak, don't underestimate the tv audience and CD/DVD sales (I'm assuming they'll market the out of this?)
If you see who the top sellers are, year after year, it's the "adult contemporary" or "easy rock" stuff like Bryan Adams, Barenaked Ladies, Enya, Celine Dion, etc. *We* don't care about that lineup...but in terms of mass appeal, I think they'll do ok, especially if they get some last minute big names on there. I was impressed at the talent they assembled kind of last minute for the Tsunami relief...hopefully they pull something out here too?
side note: The Hip are one of the greatest live acts I have ever witnessed...They were *meant* to be seen live, not listened to on a CD! Gord Downey has some *serious* stage presence...in the same manner as Michael Stipe of R.E.M....I can't explain it...just pheonomenal. Both are well past their prime...and I haven't seen the Hip in years (ACC opening was the last time, maybe), but they're worthing seeing at least once if you get the chance (unless they've really gone downhill lately.
I think I'd still take today's Hip over today's Rolling Stones ;) |

I guess we should give our debt reduction payments to charity...
If we do that, will Geldof come to save Canada when our economy has gone to hell and nobody has health care, social housing, EI, CPP, etc? |

Unfortunately Geldof didn't get the memo about the last time he held an event like this where all the 'LIVEaid' sat on docks rotting or went to tribal warlords.
The only thing we did for Africa in this past 20 years was give them better clothes...
Unless they come up with a solution to Africa's square-tribal-politics trying to fit into round-real-world-politics, I'm not going to waste my $$ (again)...

disclaimer: I'm all for helping my fellow man but unless they're willing to help themselves... |

I couldn't have said it better!
But this just kills me:

The Americans can keep her sorry ass. Can't even be bothered to come back to her HOMELAND?! My guess is this was a regular Las Vegas show she was doing anyways that will just be fed up here...with her usual paycheque going to her pocket I'm sure. |

whoops...missed that :o
but it's kind of irrelevant to my point anyway...that the intended and actual audience for this kind of event will probably be rather happy with the people they have on the bill. ;) |

Canada had a $7.25 billion DEFICIT in 2004
http://www40.statcan.ca/l01/cst01/govt01b.htm
If you want to compare Canada to other countries (especially unitary countries like France and Italy), you have to include federal AND provincial figures.
Our deficit is hidden due to the vertical fiscal imbalance between the provinces and the feds created by the Lieberals. |

Amen if you want the help of the first world nations you (the gov' in question) should really start acting like them. Until they decide to settle their problems, educate their populations and spend less money on guns to fund their tribal warfare I don't really think any amount of money will do any good. Just cuz you give them money for food doesn't mean they'll spend it on food. |
