And the law is on her side with this one too.
Incredible. We should send these people up north where they can live thier lives people free.
quote: | Sarah Lightbody is fed up. And she’s not alone.
What used to be her quiet neighbourhood is now home to a giant air conditioner on the grounds of a nearby apartment complex.
The killer cooler is not only large and unslightly, it’s also noisy. So noisy, in fact, residents across the street can hear it all day and all night as it clicks on and off and on again in the stifling summer heat.
The landlord installed it back in November. But the problems only really heated up with the summer.
And it’s driving those who live on Wolseley St. near Bathurst and Dundas crazy.
“It is a problem. It is a problem for my life,” Sarah complains as she works in her former garden oasis and the giant compressors come back on. “It is really loud in my kitchen. It is loud in my living room. It is shocking. It is jolting. I'm tired.”
The machine is just inches from Mike Hamilton’s property line. “I will never get used to that because it is so jarring once it comes on,” he gripes. “Goes on for five minutes, shuts off for ten, comes back on for five. Mostly what goes through my mind is the gall of the landlord.”
Residents are trying to get it removed, claiming it violates Toronto’s noise bylaw. A city inspector who took measurements on Friday agrees it’s way beyond the acceptable legal limit.
“It could be well 30 db above what is permitted,” agrees Anthony Bortola. “From my experience, that is significant … Over time, it will drive you nuts.”
The landlord, Vincent Tangretti from Memnon Property Management, insists he hasn’t received any notice from the city about any violations.
But if he doesn’t put up a sound barrier or move the unit, the city may soon have other plans. “The worst case scenario would be charges and him ending up in court and of course receiving fines.”
That’s music to Lightbody’s tortured ears. But this isn’t – getting action could take several months or more, well after the end of the summer.
“It sucks obviously,” she responds. “ But as long as I know, and I am reassured that it will be taken care of, I think I am okay with that.”
And for a device designed to keep people cool, it’s making a lot of them hot under the collar.

Yea, but a lawnmower isn't going on 24/7 is it? |

To put a human face on all this, we actually had neighbours a couple of years ago that complained about our a/c. And these are houses, not apartment buildings. Wanna guess what kind of people they were? Retired, bored, salty old cranks without a friendly bone in their withering bodies. I'm not even exaggerating - they were genuinely unpleasant people.
Anybody seen that stupid beer commercial with the dude in the North Pole, and at the end he says, "and this is the best thing about my place... peace and quiet". And it's true - if you want peace and quiet, move to the ing NORTH POLE, because we've got over 4 million people living in a city that was never designed or planned to support more than half of that!
I get woken up on many a morning (sometimes Sunday mornings) by lawnmowers here. And you know, "it sucks". But hey, when else are they going to mow? 3 am? Should they take time off work perhaps to mow their lawns? They've gotta do their chores too, and besides, when my neighbours are out mowing their lawns it means there's that much less chance of some dickweed smashing my car windows and helping themselves to my stereo or other belongings. And no, I have no clue what the point of that last part was. |

I'm pretty sure that's the whole issue here. These people are unable or unwilling to face up to the real problems in their lives so they blow off steam by bitching and moaning about trivial issues like this.
Buy some $2 earplugs, bitch. |

Sounds about right to me |

NOISE |
If this A/C is loud enough for the whole block to complain, then it must be really loud.
You can't compare this to the situation with the people who moved next to a golf course at all.
The residents aren't retarded. If it goes beyond the legal limit then YES do complaint!
Her complaint is VALID. |
