Never been to spundae (19 as we speak) but, from my experiences at heaven...you get a massive +1 from me! :D |

club heaven has been steppin up to the plate. almost seems like every event is better than the last. the upgrades to the venue are dope. cant wait til the patio is finished.
spundae seems like they are on vacation or something. they havent had a headliner there thats interested me in a while. i mean G&D this comin saturday for a 4 hour set...thats been done before.
club heaven keeps it fresh and brings in new talent to the westcoast. its like every event is a "first time LA appearance."
what other club seeks the input of its attendees on what talent should be brought to the club? Heaven. I really like that.
I like that I can party with my friends that aren't 21 yet, while partying with my friends that are 21+. Everyone should be together.
I hope Spundae comes back strong with some dope ass lineups over the summer...but lately, u just dont hear too much about Spundae. And when you do, its the Heaven crew thats throwin it down in the back room.
For sure, right now...Heaven > Spundae. |

| Spundae transcends just the lineups - it really offers the best of what clubbing should be about (and I'm not biased in any way, just stating my opinion from 15 years of clubbing in Europe and North America). It is what all great clubs should be - good friends meeting up to listen to go music in friendly surroundings. Heaven has a long way to go in this regard. That's not to say it wont happen, but imo Spundae is by a country mile, the best experience that North America has to offer at this time. |

i hear you about the vibe that spundae has. ive been going to spundae for only 2 years...i am just a youngun...Spundae was my favorite place in the world for the longest time. but lately their lineups have been slackin a bit. there hasnt been anyone that has like really captured my attention lately. I'd say Heaven is catching up and taking big steps. |

my $.02
you cant really compare a single genre club vs a club that brings in genres that run the full gambit.
just like you cant compare a good house club to heaven.
if you want to argue venue, or prices, parking, lights, etc ok.
heaven is great at what it does, and that is bring in big room trance to a crowd of fanatic trance fans that eat that up week in week out.
spundae is great at what it does, vary its lineups week to week to give a consitent in quality often different soundscape for ppl like me that cant listen to one genre every friday or saturday.
in the end they both rock. |

you have to respect what heaven is doing, they really take a risk to push the music...
but from a business stand-point i would think leon & the heaven co. would like to accomplish what spundae has. |

I agree with a lot of Hypersky's assement....from the few times I've been to Heaven, it was purely about the music and not really much more. I love it for that. It's focused in that way.
With Spundae, yeah I go for the music, but I also go and look forward to seeing tons of people I know. And yeah, these are the same people I see at other place, but the focus just seems to be much more than just the music in the end when it comes to Spundae nights.
I love to see Heaven getting bigger and bigger. I think Heaven is one of the best things to happen in the west coast EDM scene in a long time. And as they grow, the atmopshere will change as well as their marketshare expands to the more casual clubbers.
I'm glad to see that Heaven has come in and not only created their own audience, but at the same time hasn't really taken away from anyone else's either. It proves that there is room to share the spotlight in LA. I mean, why wouldn't there be. The place is HUGE. It's just about finding that niche that no other club has seen, sticking with it, and seeing it build.
Whether it's earning money or losing money, if Heaven just stays in there and fights their way through there's only going to be good things that come out in the end. It's impossible to say just how, but it'll happen. I feel it.
The only thing we can hope for is that as Heaven continues to grow, it doesn't get into their heads. I personally don't think it will going by Heaven's (Leon's) attitude. He seems very passionate. I love it.
Back to Spundae, I actually love the focus Spundae has had lately. Knowing the people behind the scene, it seems the mindset of them today compared to a year or two ago is a bit different. They are more about the music, more about the energy, more about just making every night a good experience than anything else. It's like they are back to simply having fun -- maybe that's why the founders decided to go back to running things on their own. I dunno why I feel that way, I just do. It's almost as if they've learned a little bit from Heaven in that they want to create the experience that they were known for long ago. Then there's the thing I love most about both Spundae and Heaven. They both take CONSTRUCTIVE criticism well. They listen. Unlike other clubs and promoters I know who are defensive in every way and think their way is perfect.
I know a lot of people who don't really like my attitude in giving criticism. They see me as a hater. Well, OK, I can be (or I am) a bitch about some things, but it's all expressed in my love of the scene and that fact that I want to see it get better. I want to see it grow. It kills me to see when promoters/clubs are ing up on such little things that would make such a big different. This can be from things like DJ setups to having a proper lineup set (ie. a promoter who has a DJ who plays to hard/fast or the wrong style right before the headliner is about come on.). Most of the time, promoters take offense to the I say...and maybe sometimes it's appropriate for them to, but 90% of the time it seems people actually do agree with me...it's just they are too ignorant to actually listen to everyone's thoughts because they feel like making themselves feel good instead of the masses. The thing about both Spundae and Heaven -- They might see our attitudes as being bitchy, but in the end they both listen and they both have adjusted over time by our statements it seems. I love that.
A lot of people keep saying that the DJs Spundae bring in are repetitive, blah blah blah...do me a favor and compare their lineups today compared to what they were two, three years ago and you will see a large part of their lineups are overall different. They are. Of course, there are the lineups that ARE well-known...but the majority are different.
Personally, I think Spundae and Heaven can learn off of each other...and in a way, I think they are. Maybe it's not intentional but subconsciously, it's like they are feeding off of each other. It's like Heaven knows what they want to move torward and Spundae is reminded of their roots.
OK, I've got to use the bathroom, so I can't type no more. lol.
Dave
PS. These are thoughts out of my own brain and I would like to say they are expressed with an unbiased state of mind. |
