in my opinion Boa was doomed from the start. The fact that they didn't serve alchohol was one indication of that. If we were in Montreal, where after hours aren't allowed to serve any alchohol whatsoever, that would be a different story....But our club industry is one that's dominated by clubs that serve alchohol. A lot of people said that it didn't matter, and that it made no difference in attendance, but the club was limiting the demograph that they were catering to.
They only catered to the "let's get high and drink water all night" or "let's stay sober and drink water all night" crowds, while forgetting about the "I don't wanna drink any ing water or stay sober, and I wanna get drunk off my ass" crowd (ie me).
Now they have no sound system, which was their main selling point, and the main reason for going, because they didn't contribute anything to the decor, which leaves it looking sub par.....And all of that is on top of the fact that they have a ridiculous location for the DJ booth, which was primarily to keep the records from skipping from a sound system that they no longer have. I heard that they went to a lot of trouble for that DJ booth too. Going as far as drilling a gigantic hole right through the foundation to make it separate from the rest of the building.
It's too bad too. I hate to see that our electronic music scene can't flourish. |
I go to BOA almost every weekend. Boa wasn't doomed .. the problem was plain and simple, "mismangament of the money" They owe money, cash $$$$, mula, muto bella ;) .. The club was doing very well at the door, the talent they were bringing in were insane ie. DEMI. Their parties were legendary ie. 24hr. new years danceathon ....
& WHEN WE WERE IN MIAMI FOR THE CONFERENCE THEY WERE THE CLUB FROM TORONTO THAT EVERY PROMOTER/DJ/PRODUCERS WERE TALKING ABOUT. BOA IN A YEAR AND HALF WAS MASKING HUGE NOISE IN THE SCENE WORLD WIDE! 'TILL THIS DAY DANNY T STILL WANTS TO COME BACK AND PLAY BOA!!
So please this doomed crap is crap, don't be so ignorant with these, I told you so's!
Unfortunatly people really don't know what happens behind closed doors, the only problem with BOA, were the owners. They couldn't get their together.
Carey really did do a great job giving Toronto an alternative place to go to. I hope all of this works itself out.
BTW. Carey is bringing back, Chus & Ceballos Sunday JUly 24 @ LOT, you see boa still lives!

After reading this thread and the Tribe one I thought I'd offer my two cents. Being employed in the legal realm, I've seen many similar scenarios with clubs as well as other businesses. What usually happens is that a third party sees a "takeover" opportunity and attempts to force-out a business by collaborating with the suppliers. They try to perform a "hostile takevoer" by influencing creditors to repossess equipment or owners to "lock the current tenants out" due to lease default. Sometimes they even promise to pay off some of the debt. The third party then swoops down and takes over with a cash infusion, usually slightly adjusting the current business and re-opening soon thereafter. In Calgary, the majority of clubs are owned by one company and they used this tactic to take control of a prime property near the Stampede grounds a couple years back. They new owners were taken to court and their takeover was seen to be legal in the eyes of the law. My guess...Boa will be soon be no more and replaced with a similar club with a different name and ownership...but possibly the same sound system.

I believe that Boa was trying to emulate what Stereo has done for Montréal in this city. It was definitely a bold step on their part and as you so correctly pointed out Mr. Furious, by being one of the few venues that didn't serve alcohol and thus was a "true afterhours", they may have perhaps lost that part of the clubbing demographic.
However, maybe Toronto wasn't completely ready for this sort of place like Montréal has grown accustomed to? I wouldn't say they were doomed from the start though.
They purposely had a 21+ rule and no alcohol because they didn't want to turn the place into an underage, "let's-get-wasted" venue. They made an effort to focus on the DJ, the music, the sound - the qualities of a good club that are often overlooked in favour of $2 beers.
If you are the type that wants to get ruined every time you go out, there are plenty of places like that here. Boa brought out different people and crowds because Lord knows, some of us like to go to clubs for reasons other than getting drunk (or cracked out for that matter).
As for the decor, I don't think anything was particularly bad? Just out of curiousity, what would constitute good decor?
In any case, I am not trying to start anything on this thread. I sincerely hope that the club pulls through this situation. It would be very unfortunate if we did lose Boa because they brought a lot of good DJs here and good memories to many. We musn't lose sight of what Jeff said about people who work at the club and depend on it for income. I cannot imagine what they are going through.
One last thing Mr. Furious, if you're ever in Montréal, check out Stereo. Nevermind the crowd and whatever, just compare what is there and what Boa has. I think you'll find a lot of similarities.
And Sly_Guy, afterhours are suppose to have black lights! LOL :D CoZo! |

I stand corrected.
I always spell that word wrong.
....But that's a spelling issue, not grammar. Grammar is the way in which words form sentences correctly.

I have to agree that no alcohol was sometimes a deciding factor for me and my friends who still party but not in that sense.
Industry is legendary and they fully served until 2. Some people drank, others didnt It was open till 8 am and EVERYONE had a great time.
I dont think this weighs into the mess that is happening today though, but i thought i should voice my opinion about the alcohol part of the night.
Too bad if this is true about Boa. Everyone (including competition) should be upset by this. The more venues and outlets for EDM dance music there are the more demand there will be and the more choice we will have for a night out.
I do wish however that we could go back to having big nights with locals. Thats why i liked 99 Sudbury. A modern day version of how it used to be. |

I guess you never saw my Frankie Knuckles at Stereo review. Stereo is a legendary club with the best sound system i've heard in my life. I can understand that Boa was trying to do something different, but with every single club in the city serving alchohol, including The Guvernment and System, I felt they were at a disadvantage. It was like showing up to a gunfight armed with a knife. |

... or is it, the way in which words correctly form sentences?
Mind you, I always thought it was the person who wrote the words that formed the sentences correctly, not the words on their own.

Ok, well at least you know about Stereo. I rarely surf these boards anymore so I probably missed your review.
And I agree with you entirely, Stereo's sound system is AMAZING! :D I've seen Sander Kleinenberg and David Morales (NYE 03) there so I'm sure Frankie Knuckles would be quite the spectacle there as well.
The no alcohol thing may have been a factor but they took a different approach to the whole clubbing and afterhours experience. You have to give them credit for that. :) |
