How do you keep up???

| With all these different artists and remixes, how do you keep tabs of all the new stuff coming out? Moreover, if you're just getting into trance, how do you even catch up by getting to know all the stuff that has been releases over the past few years? If I had to make a tracklist now I wouln't even begin to know where to start. Sure I could pick 12-15 songs i like, but how do you know if its a good mix of new and old? It just seems a little much at times. |

| Well I listen to music about 8-10 hours a day, I think that helps a little. |

Listening to radio shows and 'what are you listening to now' threads are a good place to start. Online record stores or digital download networks too usually are a good way to listen to latest releases. Out of every ten or twenty tracks I listen to, theres maybe one that I'll really like. So its usually a matter of grabbing a shovel and sifting through all the thats out there and finding the stuff you like...
It's one of the most enjoyable yet time consuming parts of DJing... =) |

+1 - I usually take a day a week (Usually new release day on Beatport, which is Thursday) and go through the new release sections at all the standard DL & Record shops and just hit up everything that's new in Trance, House, Prog, Electro, & Breaks. Even though there is a lot of overlap between the lists, each store has it's own exclusives or whatever.
But amen to the "time consuming" part... good thing I love new choons!

I just buy tunes that I like.
I also had a list of oldies that I keep and snap them up whenever they are available on eBay and such.
If you're just starting out, my advice would be to listen to some old school trance, and progress slowly to the new stuff. See where the music came from and get an idea where its going.
It would also help you identify your favorite 'sound' as trance from diff 'eras' kinda sound a little different.
Once you've got the big picture, make your wishlist and start shopping.

I'm a little confused, how do you guys know what you like before you hear it?
I know you can hear tracks in other DJ's sets, but what about something really great you missed just because you didn't think to look one crate over? |

yeah same here guys!
i guess i dont have alot of money and im still doing studies, so this i two factors that are stopping me. it not a living for me yet but i still do it everyday to practice!
funny thing is i tried this ID CONTEST ON TA and man i was ,
i only knew 4 songs out of 50.
WELL ALL I CAN SAY IS THERE ARE TO MANY SONGS OUT THERE1
+ WE HAVE NO GOOD RADIO STATIONS really sucks |

| As a hobby djing is not just money consuming but time consuming i probly spend hours and hours every week listening to music (always have) but i also spends hours going through other djs sets, going through online record stores etc and just looking for stuff that i like. |

ermm that sometimes happens and i might just discover the tune maybe months later or maybe never at all :D :D
what i do, however, would be to visit the record companies that stock the type of music i like..as well as the personal sites of my fave djs. they tend to have a top 10 list or some info about their new releases and that's how i discover new tracks. and of course, after that i try to search for a sample to listen to how they sound like. |

Make sure you include tunes that you like in your discogs Wantlist so that you don't forget about them!!!!
Discogs is a great way to keep track of all the tunes that you want to buy. :D
My Wantlist is up to about 200 i think and that's only a drop in the ocean...... |

So how many new tunes would you say you buy in a week? 2? 3? More? And in your sets, do you still play old songs or do you try to stick with whats newer?
And a little off topic, but how much do you get paid for a gig??? |
