He dropped a track that sounded very similar to Higher State of... in Miami too but I think it was Hardfloor - Acperience which is on Warren's new GU cd . Some other tracks he dropped were:
JZ - Robophobia
JZ - Skanksuary
Hugg & Pepp - Snabeln
Nicolas Vallee Presents Silvertone - Theme From Silvertone
Trentmoller - Rykketid
Future Funk Squad – Towards The Sun (Evil Nine Mix)
Crystal Method - Keep Hope Alive (JDS Mix)
New Order - Blue Monday (Silinder Remix)
Montero - Captain Hook
ID - Female vocal 'You took my love'
ID - Vocal 'Rock this place'
Funk D'Void and Phil Kieran - Black Worm
Sharon Phillips - Want 2 Need 2 (Trentemoller Remix)
Buick Project/KLF - @ The Rave/What time is love? (J boy Z Mash Up)
Lamb - Gorecki (? Breaks Remix) |

wanted to post up a review earlier, but have been vegetating for a few days.. so here's my quickie recap (usually after a day or two i feel like it's pointless, but i'm surprised no one talked about james' SICK SICK encore which i'll get to in a second)...
got there around midnight, and steve porter was laying down the funky goodness- lots of groovin basslines and fingerlickin-type housey breaks... he was definitely getting the crowd hyped up nicely. he always has a great energy in his sets, and it's really contagious. love it! :)
james opened with 'robophobia' and from there just kept throwing down such fun, danceable, quirky tracks-- lots of funky basslines & techy beats mixed up with some old school hip hop/electro flava! :) he was using ableton really nicely & didn't distract from the track selection by overusing fx or anything. i noticed he was looping a lot of samples & vocals but wasn't sure if he was doing this in live or cdj's... could've been either.
the last 2 hours were just insane. he played tracks i haven't heard on a big system and they just transformed into something else (that synth that comes in on the drop of "rykketid"-trentemoller & the bassline of buick project's "at the rave" sounded plain EVIL on those speakers!!! *drool*)
anyway..... THE ENCORE!! so james goes into about an hour of straight up funky new school-ish breaks, and is completely destroying the place. everyone is going crazy dancing, and then out of nowhere he drops in the intro to the plump djs' "scram". but the way he did this was technically and creatively amazing: for those that don't know this track, when the intro drops it's the bassline & this clicky high percussion. well, james just looped the hi hats for a a few measures, then dropped in the beat over it, then after about a minute he dropped the bassline and the place just exploded! it was awesome how he rearranged the buildup into his own creation. :D
THEN i thought it couldn't get any better, hearing my fav. plump djs song on that system, until it got to the 2nd drop. it's this ridiculous, dark, eerie breakdown. so right when it starts building up again, james throws in the intro to the plump djs track "the gate", (coincidentally, my other fav. plumps track...the only time i've heard both these tracks live was when i saw the plump djs at fabric!) and they melted perfectly into each other. as they both intensified, the drum rolls and synths layered and then as they dropped together, he cut it back to the first drop of "scram".....!! WHAT THE ...??? okay, i know it's not the same when it's explained, but this was some seriously brilliant ....
it was so inspiring to see that kind of creativity and innovativeness that pushes beyond just mixing and programming... i went in there knowing he was gonna it up, but how badly.. i didn't have a clue :D
okay, i'll shut up now. :toothless |
