hmm... start with a websearch, which can be handy for getting an idea about your distant roots if you have a common last name, and good for finding more specific info if you have a unique last name. then you probably have to go back to public records and/or the archives (likely in the country of origin 'cause the old stuff is usually only on microfiche) to get the real particulars. what have you found out so far?

my dad was in ireland/england recently and found that we have to go back like 400 years before our ancestry is in ireland. they immigrated to england centuries ago. my other side is ukrainian with some other mix, incl. gypsy, so some of it is plain untracable.

I never claimed to be, nor would I!

i just know that my grandma's dad was a German jew who fled the war and came to America and then converted when he married my great grandma who was French (roman-catholic)...and my mom's dad is like almost 100% irish and his last name is Caroll and my mom says i'm related to Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland...i did some research about him...the guy was a total lunatic...go figure. hahaha

my mom's distant family is all European immigrants who came to NYC via ships...like the rest of them..mostly very educated and wealthy people..

i know she had several rich uncles who were attorneys for Grace Shipping Co. back in the 40's or something and they lived in Scarsdale NY...that could probably help me too.

my dad's family was really poor and mostly rednecks from like Kentucky and Indiana... lol my dad is like 1 out of maybe 5 people in his whole family who went to college and made something of himself. i mean they're not like toothless freaks or anything like that...just good ol' southern people. all the women cook all day and all the guys watch nascar...

his grandma was a full blooded Seminole Indian, which i thought was cool. everyone keeps telling me that i could be getting a fat pay check every month because i'm native american...the Seminole Hard Rock Casino just opened up right in Ft. Lauderdale and they said i could be getting a "piece of the pie" from that if i can prove i'm an 8th seminole...but i dunno if that's a bunch of BS or not.

well My grandfather did this. we have a whole book about this.

first i'll start by giving my last name: Artoos

apparently it came from Dartois D'artois or D'arthoys

and that came from... france :D check out the history books there is a region in france, which was called (and sill is called) the artois region.
they looked it all up and went back to the year 1223
he even made a wholebook about it.. sometimes I read it again, it's allways nice to know where you are originally from

in belgium there is a beer brand called: Stella Artois
my grandfather allways told me we had to change our name into Artoos because of the beer. don't know if it's true though
