mr. poopyhead
the canadian in me says the avro arrow pwns everyone....
the toronto aerospace museum is building a full size replica of the arrow: http://www.torontoaerospacemuseum.com/home.html
dunno if they're done yet...

the rest of me says that the F14 is the greatest plane ever built (cue the top gun music)

i've built about 3 F-14 models... the best one hangs from my ceiling suspended by fishing line, along with an A-10. looks like they're flying, :)

as for WW2 planes, i vote for the de havilland mosquito just for being built out of wood, haha...

granted you were talking about bombers, but the best fighter of WWII was definitely German

http://www.luft46.com/gotha/gop60a.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horten_Ho_229

compare with the American B-2... 45 years later (which, interestingly, is a bomber)

Actually I believe the Gotha was a fighter, but that Horten you linked to was to be a strategic bomber. I don't think either of them saw action.

if we are talking of the greatest fighter ever built ill have to say its a toss up between the F15 falcon, and the P51 mustang.

the F15 has never been shot down in air to air combat and is still the only the plane to have ever shot down a satellite.
the P51 did wonders towards the end of the second world war.

TrickDaddE
Yes Germany had a lot of superior weapons in developement. All a little too late however. If the war would have gone on another 6 months to a year the V-2 rocket would have kicked everyones ass.

Anyways its probably for the better it did not happen or the world may have been more f**kup than it is today!

Yses..but the "workhorse" bomber for the U.S. 8th airforce was the B-17'snd 24's
For the Brits it was the Lancaster and Wellington.
Germans had the Heinkel 111
Lets Compare( we are omitting Russian and Japanese bombers and mahcine gun armament)

Heinkel He111H-6 :
Bomb Load 4,410lbs (2,002 kg)
Max Speed 19,680ft 258mph (416 km/h)
Max range 1,030mi (1,660 km)
Service Ceiling 23,000 ft (7,012 m)

B-17
Max Bomb Load 17,600 lb (8,000 kg) bombs
Max Speed (25,000 ft) 287 mph (463 kph)
Cruising Speed 182 mph (294 kph)
Max range 3,400 mi (5,484 km)
Service Ceiling 35,000 ft (10,670 m)

Avro Lancaster Mk.Ib
Max Bomb Load
14,000 lbs (6,350 kg) or 22,000 lbs with special "Grand Slam" modification.
Max Speed (11,000 ft) 281 mph (452 kph)
Cruising Speed (20,000 ft) 216 mph (346 kph)
Max range 1,040 mi (1,670 km) with 10,000 lbs (4,540 kg) bomb load
Service Ceiling 24,400 ft (7,315 m)

The Heinkel is out.
The B-17 can go higher, longer and has the highest max speed.
The Lancaster can carry more bombs and is faster in the cruising speed categorie than the B-17.

Now for the Avro arrow was the most superior fighter aircraft when it was developped , Mach 2 if I am not mistaken. Thanks for nothing John G. Diefenbaker.

The B-17, on normal missions, didn't even come close to carrying 17,600lbs of bombs. It's maximum payload was barely 8,000lbs.

The only time it would even come close to that spec you quoted was for very very short missions, and if it had external pylons on which to carry extra ordnance.

Oh, and...

My favourite fighter: Supermarine Spitfire XIX

My favourite interceptor: Hawker Hurricane

If I'm not mistaken, isn't it the F15 EAGLE and the F16 Falcon?
