| I always wondered why some edm producers do (but really mostly the once that produce trance) elongated breakdowns. i understand why you put a breakdown in the track, to create some tension to release it in a climax, but why do producers insist of making them longer than their own good. why do producers put so much focus in the one section that is beatless when you are creating music for people to dance to. |

| Screw the dancing, breakdowns are the best part. |

Yeah, I used to love long breakdowns but I'm not so sure now. It's just annoying if you're trying to keep dancing to a track, I'm more into tech-trance these days.
Breakdowns are cool if you're just listening to a track and you wanna be overwhelmed by the climax. Some of them are just too long though... |

| I prefer the ones without breakdowns, where the melody just joins the beta like thunder in a storm. |

| Breakdowns are important because you need a rest every now and then, and they're very effective if they're done right. The stupidly over-long ones kill the whole thing, more often than not. |

But people have brains, and if they "need" a rest they'll rest whether there is a breakdown or not. When they get tired, not when the DJ or the song decides they're tired. So, your argument is not really a strong point at all. In fact it is a non-sequitur, as you completely dismiss there being any other way to rest besides in a breakdown. You do not dismiss such? Well then you must admit that your argument, the credibility of which hinges on breakdowns being the sole source of rest, is a load of bull . Either way it's a load of bull actually.
The position that long breakdowns mainly serve to disrupt the rhythm of a set and mood of a room makes much more sense. Or something else. |

| One good example i can remember is seeing steve helstrip, using tracks with breakdowns. then coming in with a nice pick u up track. works to perfection. |

Excpetion to the rule is Tilt - I Dream (Tilt's Resurrection Mix). One long, awesome, orgasmic breakdown:eyes: |

I figure breakdowns in trance are really part of a huge conspiracy by The Man.
When trance was getting big, so was the drug ecstacy. Unfounded worries that taking said drug lead to dehydration was cause for concern by the higher ups. However, they knew no matter how hard they tried, they would never be able to stem usage 100%. How would they be able to save the kids from themselve, then?
Simple. By paying off trance producers to give ample time for resting as well as dancing. If the kids don't have any rhythm to dance to, they will be able to catch a breather, maybe grab a drink (the bars love breakdowns), and, above all else, reduce the risk of dehydration.
Of course, as drug use got more intense, so did the breakdowns to counter-act hyper-dancing. It comes as no surprise that some of the biggest, longest breakdowns were produced when ecstacy use was at its highest.
You heard it here, folks. If you support long breakdowns in trance music, you are in fact supporting the government trying to control our lives! For the sake of all our freedoms, boycott all long breakdowns in trance music!
Maybe not. |

that was a very lame excuse. |

Long breakdowns don't really fit into the dance floors.. there is usually a lounge area (or café or something) for stuff like that where it doesn't matter whether there is a beat or not.
But when dance floors are concerned, the shorter the breakdowns are, the less people will fall asleep there during breakdowns. As said, you can always rest when you feel like it while on the dance floor, you don't need a breakdown to do so. You are a thinking creature anyway, at least most of us are. If you can't do that, you'd better look into the mirror and ask yourself how and why are you still alive?
For listenin long breakdowns are juuust fine but for dancing i'd want something else. |
