cd 1 is great but cd 2 just destroys...absolutely amazing...
and face it, every dj has moved into electro house or electro influences...you guys have to learn how to move forward too...
you cant expect lawler to still be mixing tribal...sounds get old after a while and need to be change! |

But I can't just change my opinion of things just because "it's time," my mind doesn't work that way. I either feel it or I don't. I know there's a huge upswing in Desyn, new Digweed, Nic Fanciulli, etc. electro house or whatever. I've actually given them a listen a lot but for the most part, it just annoys me. I'm sorry, it's just my opinion. You can still be tribal-esque and be new and fresh. There are some electro songs that I like when they're turned WAY up in a club but at home it just sounds like some new wave crap mixed with Talking Heads mixed with too strong Felix Da Housecat influences.
The artists evolve and sometimes it works and sometimes... it loses what what made you love them in the first place.
I will get the CD nevertheless and try for myself before I go popping my mouth off anymore and go in with an open mind because Lights Out 1 & 2 were awesome. I just have reservations. And I will be there to see him in NYC October 21st in the front of the line. |

i see what you mean man...you absolutely have a point, electro could be very cool or very boring...the cool electro is ussualy in the angello & ingrosso, guetta, mylo, even max graham style to name a few djs...
i just find that lawler has a cool, new and refreshing sound...his em is cool and his latest live sets have been great, even though there are not all that similar to this mixed cd which is still cool...
it will grow on you, give it a shot! |

Here we go again, this stupid classification back and forth. I don't even want to post anything so much anymore, you always get people getting so technical. Yes I think of it as electro-esque. What do you think it is?
He plays other stuff too I know, it's eclectic, but there's definitely a lot of "electro" in there in my opinion!!!!! There's funky, there's tech, there's progressive I know. On and on..

well i havent heard masiello his sets, but OS_0.1 and balance 008 are no way near electro. So thats why i was surprised. Could be he plays more electro in his sets though, cant comment on that ;)
and on a side note: i dont like that electro hyping either. Depends on the dj though but mostly im not feeling it either. |

Very civilized retort, very nice. Yeah I think it depends on the DJ. I was basing Desyn off the several live mixes I've heard and live in person. But I haven't heard the Balance mix yet even though people have been raving about it. I will go in with an open mind on that one too once I get ahold of it.
But back to Mr. Lawler, I won't pass any further judgement until I hear the compilation. I actually didn't like his last EM mix. We'll see...
End of rant |

as spoken by lawler in his interview with ivibes:
i:Vibes: How did you get so into tribal house? Most deejays bar a certain few never really made a career of playing it
A: I have always been into Drums, Drums and Drums!!! Love EM! Always present in my selection of tracks and bass!!! I love that bass!!! and there was a wave of music that came from the States, that was perfect for me and it was making its way heavily into my sets. Nice dark, drugy, dirty beats. Yes please sir! and then it was tagged by the likes of you (The Press) as "Tribal". For me it was just another kind of house music, another year with new influences. Music is constantly evolving, what are the press gonna do? Keep thinking of new names! hehe! Next I will be playing Tinka House
i:Vibes: I've seen you numerous times over the last five years and you've gone from almost pure tribal at times to more progressive tinted tribal to almost a mix of just plain dark music, even your latest essential mix was electro. How has Steve Lawler's sound changed over the past few years?
A: Haha! I love that! My sound has stayed the same from day one. All the elements that I love about music, are still as present in my today's choice of records as they always have been. Its the music that changes, the equipment that its made on, the new producers with all their new influences. Listen to my music now and you will still hear interesting drum patterns, you will still hear big chunky basslines and nice little vocal samples. Now...has that really changed? |
