If we can get Oakenfold to come....why can't we...

Get some other big name DJ's who don't play trance. Why can't we get a Hernan?? Zabiela?? Luke Fair? Deep Dish?? etc.... I just don't understand why it's only trance we get coming to San Antonio. Antro isn't that bad of a venue considering we don't have a lot to choose from. I keep waiting for there to be a post that James Zabiela will be playing in San Antonio...but I won't hold my breath
Sorry for this rant post. |

Have the local clubs tried to book them? If your club scene isn't as well-established as, say, Dallas, and your local clubs can't or aren't willing to compete for top billing with the DJs, of course they're not going to be able to book these guys. Also, does San Antonio have a bad reputation within the industry for making life hard on visiting artists? If your city treats them like and there've been some bad past experiences among touring, that word spreads like wildfire. So now, in the eyes of potential visiting tour prospects, you've got an unfriendly city with sub-par venues and a reputation for being pains in the ass to visitors and aren't willing to negotiate a decent deal with the prospective's agency for get the venue on their tour.
There's probably a couple of reasons why progressive, electro-, techno, hardhouse, etc. DJs are avoiding San Antonio. Might want to do some checking around and try and divine what the root of the problem is. If it's just a matter of the clubs not trying, then that's an easy fix. If Timo Maas was raped in the latrine of a local club by the club's owner and got his money stolen and his beer went flat, and he told everybody that spinning in San Antonio was like spinning in Gen-Pop in Oz, you've got a much bigger problem to have to overcome. :eyespop: |

| I appreciate your mature response. I guess I just feel that if you can afford to bring someone overpriced like Oakenfold then why can't we afford to get someone of equal or lesser value. I am not even sure if San Antonio would support talent like Deep Dish or Zabiela. Sometimes I think I would feel embarrassed if a proper talent came to town. All these kids with the glowsticks...people just coming so they can get high. I think when I went to see Judge Jules someone brought a whistle(very annoying). Gotta love San Antonio and our narrow mindedness =). |

eh, trance sells, names like oakenfold, tiesto, doesnt matter anymore, everyone goes, and i mean everyone
good topic though
ever since their names went into mainstream, theyre performances in a lot of ways have overshadowed all other DJs and genre's. The best way I can explain it, is that there was a time when there was no real spotlight, so there wasnt much darkness either. It was pretty balanced out.
we've all been to the performance with a not-so-big dj, and the attendance is usually always disappointing. Unfortunately these days, dedicated listeners are too far and few between to have a real event, in comparison to these BIG-TIME events. Its pretty tough in edm. Its either all or nothing. Sell GOOD or not at all.
Its also a double edged sword. As much as you want your favorite DJs to come to town, you dont want them to go BIG-TIME either. The best you can do is hope they have affiliation with a BIG-TIME headliner, and you may get to see them open up.
Thank to the concept of "opening DJs", ive seen a lot of DJs I wouldnt have been able to see otherwise. Half the events I go to, im more interesting in seeing the opener. |

I am not against an artist going mainstream...I am against artists who go mainstream(like oaky and tiesto) and could care less about the product they are giving us consumers. I remember seeing Tiesto years before he was voted Number one DJ and then again after. His latter show(at Far west) was horrible compared to seeing him years earlier. I understand that we need to have the big names in order to draw the crowd...and I do appreciate them having AVB as part of the lineup for the people who know what's what.
I don't think Judge Jules is mainstream.....unless all of San Antonio tunes into Radio one on Fridays =). We were able to bring him and get a decent crowd response. If anything I would think James Zabiela is more popular then the Judge. I am just wishing the promoters would bring more then just trance |

a little off-topic, but I saw Luke Fair at a small (100 person) club called Anu in SF last week. He put on a really good show, I was glad to see him. I didn't realize he was a "Big Name" though.
When I lived in SF, I didn't value the depth & breadth of talent that came through, as there was ALWAYS someone playing. Now that I live in Austin, if I have a chance to see someone, I go. |

I'm not saying you ahve to be on MTV to have good turnouts. We had a good turnout for jules also. There's "MTV" mainstream, then theres the "EDM" mainstream, like jules, cox, etc. When it comes to EDM mainstream, I think it can go either way. For example we had a good turnout for Jules, really bad turn-out for Marco V. |

| The Sunday Memorial weekend Marco V show got zero promotion, at least in the Austin area. |
