its not that they suck because theyre on mtv, its that they suck because they play ty music, have crappy lyrics and incorporating rap in their songs. they use simple notes and power chords to sound heavy unlike complex melodies that the so called "unknown" bands put time and effort into (theyre quite known just not in north america, just like if you go and ask random people if they know armin van buuren). for me nu metal seems like a music for a pissed off teen that wants to smash something, unlike "unknown" metal that provides good music that you can enjoy listening to not just smashing things to.
edit: System Of A Down is a perfect example of one of those mtv bands that i love because they provide quality music. |

| arguing about what bands are good or not is just retarded. Everyone knows that mainstream/bad bands suck but people still listen to them. Just like in EDM most lesse known and underground bands are what's really worth listening to. |

If you were a popular dj what would you spin? Name some producers.
And YOU think mainstream bands suck, I think some mainstream bands are good even though they're famous which is not even a problem to me. If anything, "unknown" bands are "unknown" cause THEY are the ones that suck. |

you couldnt get it more wrong. by your analysis someone like britney spears is the best artist out there. mainstream music is engineered specifically to attract a certain demographic with a simplistic catchy tune that plays throughout the song. its like a long jingle. and it has a constant promotion that "unknown" bands dont have/want. but for example take metallica. they were an "unkown" band that gone mainstream. theyre playing non conventional music yet theyre mega-popular, of course they still had to change their style to suit the demographic. so mainstream music is mostly targeted at little kids who do not yet fully appreciate music. |

it appears to me you skip words while reading a sentence.
but listen, look closely, VERY closely and you'll notice a four-letter word that says "SOME" as opposed to "ALL" which is a very broad term and i specifically wrote "SOME" for a reason so please pay attention, otherwise, be quiet. Thank you.
Now, your point is obsolete, just because a band is "unknown" doesn't mean they're good at all. I can't label music that easily. I'm not saying that I avoid listening to "unknown" bands by all means cause that's stupid. Although, I know what I like and I know what I want as soon as I listen to it, I don't need to search for "unknown" bands in the internet so I can feel like I "know" about music, those high school days are over for me.
Anyway, answer the question I asked to the other kid and also, what "unknown" bands don't maintain a "simplistic catchy tune". Besides, as you may know most songs or music in general should follow a certain pattern, and that's a known thing, or "unknown" bands don't do this? if not, what is it that they do that's SO special?
So name 5 or more, if you want, "unknown" bands that are OH-SO insanely good but CHOOSE not to be marketed in the music industry, please. |

well in my analysis of what youve said i was refering to the statement "If anything, "unknown" bands are "unknown" cause THEY are the ones that suck" which you generalize all "unkown" bands as crappy. and when i say "unkown" i refer to those bands that i listed thats why i put them in quotes because frankly theyre not that unknown to those who love that genre. and you are right just because a band is unkown doesnt mean its good and just because a band is mainstream doesnt mean its bad. I just find that many of mainstream make music that does not appeal to me at all (ive listed the reason). and again its not about searching UNKOWN so i can feel i know about music its searching something thats good that you enjoy. if you feel like you enjoy whatever they play on mtv im not here to tell you that youre wrong and you shouldnt listen to them. and to answer your question, i would pretty much play every band that ive listed. check out Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons 23 minute song not a single chorus. |

alright so now we're getting somewhere, this means there is a small possibility you WILL enjoy a band featured on MTV then?
i know dream theater and i know the song. but thats just one song man, if they managed to make the same thing with several tunes it would be a different story, i guess that would prove part of you point. i have images and words and i must say, although its a great cd ive noticed that at least the first 5 tracks have choruses and guitar solos with typical 80s-metal-band vocals. so i need more. you put it as there are THOUSANDS of bands out there that pull it off.
also, i don't enjoy everything in mtv but i think they've helped out some bands that you listen to nowadays. |

heh yes ive actually said that i do enjoy some bands on mtv and i put System Of A Down as one. i also like Linkin Park. and as for Dream Theater, you HAVE to listen to Scenes From A Memory album, absolutley brilliant greatest master piece. and also songs like Space Dye Vest, The Mirror, Metropolis pt.1, Erotomania (though instrumental, but instrumental are incredible!), Home (but then again the entire scenes from a memory is brilliant), This Dying Soul, etc... there are plenty of bands that provide complex music without putting so much effort on repeating the same sound over and over the entire song, but though there are plenty that use choruses there isnt a big emphasis on the tune that plays during it. there is always plenty of amazing riffs and melodies surrounding the chorus and the verses.

of course i agree with you on some bands. linkin park is great. yes, i have listened to that album too (my old roommate was a dream theater junkie).
well, if u know so many bands that provide this complex sound you're saying, do tell cause i'd be glad to represent the music of the future.
of course so i guess the conclusion is that mtv is not as bad as it seems. ;)
