Hidden Sex Scene in Computer Game - OMG (pg. 2)

Americans will never understand the European culture, and vice-versa. It's just two completely different mentalities.

Americans have no idea that in Europe, porn and nudity are part of daily life. It's just something so mainstream that it's constantly shown everywhere to everyone, nobody even thinks twice about it, be it kids or their parents.

In America, porn and nudity are strictly shielded from daily public life. That's why most Americans here agree with the 'uproar' while the Europeans are at a loss for words .

I don't see how any cultural views factor in. This is a case where the game developers have broken the law, or at least tried to cut corners around it. The legal age to view pornography in the U.S. is 18. Now you can get into a lengthy debate about how blurry the distinction of what is pornography is, but from what I understand the scene shown in the game is clearly pornographic. If I am wrong that the scene is pornographic, clearly that is, then I will take back what I am saying. However, regardless of whether or not you agree with the law it is the law and must be obeyed until it is changed. That is why I agree with the uproar, not because I am an American.

Culture dictates which laws are strictly enforced, and which aren't.

For example, in most countries, laws pertaining to this issue may also exist, but are not enforced at all. People generally are fine with it. The difference is that in the US, these laws are actually enforced and people are surprisingly attentive to them. Why they are so attentive is because they're paranoid about pornography. Again, the link between culture and concrete laws.

In Germany, 16-18-year-olds are technically permitted to drink beer but not hard liquor. However, at parties and in clubs, they drink all kinds of alcohol. So that particular law doesn't have much weight to the German people (or police), while laws on taxes, economy, and medicine perhaps matter a lot more to them.

Another example from American politics. Many states still have a law on the books that prohibits couples (man/woman) from co-habitating with each other without being married. Some states have laws that you can't check in to a hotel room with a woman who's not your wife.

Now, these laws are from long ago... The American culture has evolved... but they still exist. Nobody has struck them down. However, just because they exist doesn't mean anyone follows them, and it doesn't mean that you'll say to me "I agree because I'm a law-abiding American" when you're caught with your hand in the jar :toothless It has a lot to do with culture!

So, irrespective of the existence of laws, we can deduce (based on enforcement and public debate) that in the American culture, living with a girlfriend is OK, but a porn scene in a video game is definitely not OK. In the European culture, both of these and many more are OK. That was my point in the first post. Get it?

Its not ridiculous at all to see why this is an uproar. Say I produce a magazine with graphic content but is available to minors, but the catch is on page 69 Jenna Warpig is doing spread eagle. Well, there's a problem because pornography can only be bought by non-minors (18+). Regardless if its a page, a two second clip, or a four hour fest, pronography is pornography and the game must either comply with the law (regardless of wether you believe it to be just) or face the consequences. I personally could carae less for the game. I believe it was a game made to arose a reaction, remember word of mouth is the best form of marketing. Sure they might get slapped with a fine, but do you know how many kids are going to rush out and by the game and the sequals to come. So please, don't bull me with this sob story for the game programmers. They should get heavily fined for believing thye were above the law.

The above is absolutely correct. Couldn't have said it better myself.

I think you mean 1984? (Orwell's book?)

What's kind of ridiculous was that in the Vice City version, you can pick up hookers, hear what's being said when the sex is happening in the car (and I don't think anyone is under any illusions about what's going on when the car is rocking back and forth)...then, when she gets out, you can jump out, beat the out of her, get your money back and drive over her as you speed away....yet, there was no uproar over THAT!!

Where the company goofed was in denying it was built in to the game...they should have just pulled a George W. and said "Yah, I did it...so what?" Then the issue may have died...unless they wanted this coverage and that's why the denied it, knowing it would spark more press?....who knows?

What I mean is, you'll be walking on the street or driving, and there's billboards with naked women; you'll be reading a mainstream newspaper and there's photos with nudity; you'll be watching the news on TV and a report on breast cancer will show women's breasts etc. Not to mention, on all the beaches women are topless.
