I have to agree that here in the US, that problem isn't really prevalent. I've played guitar for 8 years now, drums as well for 10 years, and I've been into many different kinds of music, primarily metal, the guitar virtuosos, and jpop. Of course I went through the indie scene phase as well (saw some shows kids would kill for nowadays). Its interesting how I got into trance though, since I've always hated electronic music. It always sounded extremely repetitive to me, but once when I was under the influence of something I'm not going to mention specifically, a friend of mine put on Oakenfold in Ibiza, Part 1, the one with Nalin and Kane - Open Your Eyes to start, and I was hooked, straight up.
Even then, I never wanted to satrt DJ'ing to be Paul Oakenfold (which wasn't even that bad of a thing back in those days), but I did want to start DJ'ing. I think its true that 'everyone' is a DJ, in the same way 'everyone' plays guitar, but also in the same way, I think DJ'ing was never meant to be exclusive. A lot of fun can be had with a couple of guitars and friends, even if there is alarge disparity between skill levels. DJ'ing should be even easier, because even if the mix is bad, the song still plays. |

I've always wondered how people can refer to dj as a verb.
You dont dj, you mix, as dj is a noun.
Perhaps you jd (jokey discs)? |

| They either buy the equipment or just turn on the crossfader option on Winamp and attempt to make a marginally beatmatched set. But hey, that's how I started, so I won't bash it too much :p |

HAH! that's half of what I did at this 4H dance I dj-ed a year ago. :rolleyes:
I ran out of records THEY wanted to hear, and I didn't have Traktor installed, and I was WAY too poor to have Final Scratch (at the time). So I started using trusty ol winamp.
Now I got the Serato Scratch Live tho :p |

I don't call myself a DJ, I never have and probably never will because it's way to cliched. I haven't played out in a club and really at this point have no desire to. My career interests are in other areas and the only reason I piss soo much of my money into decks and vinyl is because I love it. I love mixing it and I love mixing it for other people. Sure, I'll probably never get out of the houseparty scene in my circle of friends, but I don't want to. I love being able to dictate what I play and when and I think if I had to depend on this as a job I might tire of it and lose alot of the fire so I'm happy to keep it solely as a hobby.
As far as eveyone calling themself a DJ I'd have to say that I've only really met one other person, since I've got my set-up, that told me they had decks so I've not had too much problem with it. Of course it like anything that gets popular. Just look at how many people are trying to play poker now that they show poker tournaments on every damn TV station and as mentioned before, look how many kids ran to the store and bought a skateboard because Tony Hawk got really popular. It'll always be like that and all we can do is live with it. |

I've been playing around with production for a few years now. I'm by no means a partygoer, so I just listened to the radio and kept hearing about all these big parties and events going on around. That's when I started taking an interrest in DJing. Not because I wanted to be armin or whatever, but because I wanted to get involved in the scene, and to be a part of it somehow, not just sit in some dark basement studio and work on a computer. I don't care if I don't get famous, I just want to have fun doing it. My dream is to play out and make enough money so that I can live well and not always have to worry about how expensive my hobby is.
New people will take interrest in it all the time, and that's good. But those hordes of amateurs that only want to do it to be cool, or to get girls really cheapen the art. It just bothers me that it's created this stereotype of DJs, and that now if I tell anyone that I eventually want to spin in clubs, they'll associate me with that stereotype. |

Doesn't matter what the genre is. What the hobby is. Or what the situation is.
There's an idiot in every crowd.
I just forget about it, because in the long run, do those cretons have any impact on the art? Nope.

| In america everyone thinks a DJ is a rapper. They think everything is techno, you tell them progressive theyre like omfg emo dude? or lyke progressive rock? i love linkin park man! Then you say Acid, Dude i bought some sweet ass acid at the tom petty concert last week, it was pretty dank (dank = moist and you know full of moisture), its pathetic. |

Its even worse then that in some places. People think any form of edm is techno (house, trance, breaks etc) |
