My contribution to this thread :

since I am the happy owner of a few hardware synths I decided to make a pad/lead patch à la cygnus x superstring for each of them( before I get flamed, it was absolutely not my intention to recreate the patch itself, just the type of patch, a plucked lead is not enough to judge a supersaw sound imho)
This could be usefull stuff for people who are considering these synths.

All synths use the internal efx (chorus, little reverb, heavy delay) but waldorf and sh32 have some external reverb because they have only 2 efx generators.

Waldorf microQ

Q.mp3

Own thoughts : this baby isn't made for doing these things, it's one of my favorite synths in terms of programming depth and sound variaty but for pure analog warmth, this synth sucks. It also lacks decent internal efx. This patch was made out of 3 osc's with 2 voice unison.

Yamaha an1x

An1X.mp3

My first VA and still used a lot (not only as main keyboard). It was worth every buck and it still produces hell a lot of warmth out of 2 osc's in unison.

Roland SH 32

SH32.mp3

A big drawback for everyone after a jp80x0 supersaw patches. Being a sample-based synth it lacks power and crispness. Comes nowhere near the original. Capable of some really good sounds and good value for money, just don't buy it for supersaw pads. This patch was made of of 2 supersaw-samples detuned to each other.

Novation Nova

Nova.mp3

Can do some good supersaw alike's imho. Good allround trance synth but lacks some features the waldorf has. In fact the 2 are very complementary. The patch was created with 3 double saws in unison.

Imho the yamaha an1x and the nova win hands on, but I'd like to hear some opinions :toothless

Opinions? Your patches suck. Hehe, just kidding, bro...they sound sweet...but the difference of sound between the Q and the SH32 against the AN1x and Nova is huge...WOW. Hey, there is something about the Nova's sound...it stands out from the rest. That is why I will never sell mine. :gsmile:

Hey, how do you get around the AN1x's filter stepping? It annoys the hell out of me...I read somewhere how to overcome it but I don't have time to mess with my synths anymore. :(

The only way to avoid it is keeping the resonance low, or changing the filter envelope so the sustain is 0 en decay short ( this is more hiding the problem ). It's a bit of a pain but I learned to live with it, I really love the synth, so much underrated.

^^
for the hardware synthies...
I liked the Yamaha an1x better than the Nova, Micro Q, or SH-32
It sounds pretty damn good.. it sounds as rich as a JP- but with like a more analogue feeling such as the Virus. The micro Q just sounds like a digital industrial tank. Dont know how to describe it. Not necessarily bad, but defintely its own character. SH-32 sounded worst IMO, sounds kinda tinny like a Korg ms2000. The Nova is OK, but doesnt sound as good as the Yamaha. Wasnt the yamaha also a widely used synth in the late ninetees era of trance? I thought Armin had that synth, but doesnt appear in his studio list anywhere. I could have sworn he used it for rising star - touch me (original)... wonder what he used for those arps in that song... they sound bright, maybe a JP.

Unfortunately, I didnt get a chance to listen to some of those other samples posted by the Virus users, or the one by Ross. :(

Yes VAZ Modular is great! I own a JP-8000 and with my very new patches there is not a chance that you could hear any difference! Will post some tests soon!
