Coming to NYC

Hi there,

I'll be making a little Eastocast trip with my family, arriving in NYC on Aug. 27th. Provided I can somehow cope with the Jet Lag I plan on using the oppurtunity of landing on a Saturday and go straight partying that very night. I surfed a lill' bit through the upcoming parties thread anf oudn out there are two main events that Saturday:

Roger Sanchez @ Crobar
Max Graham @ Spirit

Got a few questions to you experienced NYC clubbers. How are these clubs like? Since I'm 21 age won't be a problem, I hope. How about the dress-up though? Are those clubs snobbish/elitist? Face control? Which one would you prefer by crowd/architecture/vibe? Anyone of you going to one of the events?

Musically I have to say that I prefer Max Graham. Seen Roger once and it was nice solid House but nothing breathtaking.

Any general insider-tips for my little visit? ;) Some good record-stores, must-see fashion store4s, restuarants, clubs, bars?

cheers,

TG

the NYC Visitior Guide is a good place to start viewing

Crobar is the definitely the better club over Spirit. Better architecture, crowd and vibe. Although Spirit can have its full share of crackheads, it's by no means bad at all.

Dress code for Crobar is casual but neat. Spirit does not really have a dress code

Personally I'd go see Max Graham one street over @ Spirit, since I like Graham better

(i'm continually updating this post)

edit: version 2.0 :o

Anyhow TranceGiant both places are cool you don't have to overdress and you'll get in fine.

Btw where's Linz ;)

The dress code at Crobar does not require a collar. Just dont come there looking like you just came out of cardboard box and youll get in.

Hmm...Thanks for the answers so far. Dressing a bit more elegant is not a problem since I'm used to it by our pseudo-elitist night-clubs where getting in, despite the most exclusive clothes, is sometimes a lottery. Still, I prefer it more casual and crazy (still not looking like a bum, though!).
I just don't wanna end up in a club full with gangsters or bored snobs who won't move a foot on the dancefloor.

@jdat: Wtf, you remember? ;)
Linz is history, man. Moved to the capital, Vienna now for studying :)

Wasn't it you who got refused admission to Crobar cause you didn't have a collared shirt ? :stongue: :stongue:

I may be mistaken but I still laugh at the thought

In my experience Crobar has a friendly crowd (although not everyone come because of the music) and cool bouncers. However, the bartenders and guest list people have clearly misunderstood that whole customer concept - I've gotten more than my share of attitude from these people. Also, the sound system at Crobar is not really that great - but they compensate by playing it loud, so remember your earplugs.
I haven't been to Spirit yet, but most of those NYTAs, which I feel aligned with, recommend it over Crobar, and it is my impression that it's more "untamed" than Crobar. But it's also smaller, so if you want the super-club experience, you'll go to Crobar.
Anyway, if I go anywhere that saturday it will be Spirit.

You must have weak ears, Ive never left Crobar with any kind of ringing or pain. And I wouldnt say most, Id say its 50/50 between the NYTA's about club preference.

IMO Crobar has one of the best setup but like most clubs they tend ending up pushing the volume.

That setup is really top notch one of the best I've heard among all my years of global clubbing.

But I also think it's worse today ( well january last time I was there ) then the first times I was there

I forget but I think they changed the placement or something !?

And speaking of ear plugs I always have to wear them whenever I go out but Crobar is one of the places where I'm comfortable without them.

Yes, you're probably right, which is why I said the NYTAs that "I feel aligned with".;)
TranceGiant has read my opinions for a long long time (in another forum), and probably have a rough idea about what I value in life. So if I like someone and they like Spirit, that could either be a recommendation or warning to him. Or maybe not...:conf:

About the ears thing, I don't think I have weak ears - at least they've managed to withstand a lot of clubbing over the years (including two trips to Ibiza). But the last two times I've been to Crobar (in June and July), I definitely thought that the volume was set too high.

Woah, I never thought a club preference to be a fundamental philosophical choice to be honest ;) "Tell me where you're clubbing, and I'll tell you who you are!".
