as long there are file sharing applications like kazaa etc the music companies will be after them , and not the release groups
anyways the big companies arent the companies which got the copyright on the trance/techno.. they only got copyright on pop like b.spears and rap/hip hop music
trance / techno are usually copyrighted by small labels, which doesnt care so much about the mp3s
they go after albums.. |

And think about all the money those artists earned by promoting themselves by the means of MP3s (of course, they weren't promoting themselves, but their fans were doing so by distributing all their songs on MP3s)... Do you really think I would've known who Tiesto, PVD and other big name DJs are if I didn't have friends sending me their songs in MP3 format (I wouldn't have bought their CDs for sure, cuz they are overprices anyway, and most of that money goes to money-grabbing record companies). If it weren't for MP3s, I would've never paid $30 to see Tiesto live... and I don't think millions of others over here wouldn't do that either.

Yep, that's true... anyone can learn to crack a program, rip a song from a vinyl or a CD, but if you try distributing that material, you're breaking some laws (not that I agree with those laws, but who am I to argue them?!)... FBI and other agencies are mostly after the WAREZ pirates, since the pirates in that scene get their materials (software) either from people working in software companies (basically stealing it), or they crack the original software so that anyone can use it without paying for it (which is now stealing in a form of "not paying" for the software, which in turn generates low profits for the software companies, and then the companies can't generate enough $$$ to pay their software developers, and that results in layoffs, etc, etc).
The deal with MP3s is similar: the release groups get their CDs/Vinyls as promo materials from Djs/companies/stores that make them, and then they rip it and make it available for everyone to download (well, not everyone, but enough people)... It's just that MP3 piracy is fairly new term, while software has been pirated for a while now, and until the MP3 copyrights and all that legal mumbo-jumbo is sorted, FBI won't be going after MP3 pirates for quite a while.
And while anyone can crack a program they received from Micro$hit or a promo CD/vinyl they received in mail, when it comes to distribution of all that... hmm, that's a problem now. Sure, you can send that to a couple of your friends, and some of them might send that to a couple of their friends, and so on, and so on, but that's a slow process and not many people are gonna get your stuff anyway. If that was the case, RIAA wouldn't even care, cuz you've been making copies of tapes and CDs before and giving them out to your friends, who would give a copy of that tape to their friends, etc, and that was just fine (in legal terms no one was busting your balls)... But if you publish that copy online, on a fast T3 server, and make it available to anyone who has access to a computer and internet connection - now there's a lawsuit written all over it! The only thing is - not everyone has access to fast distribution servers, and most of the people who do have access to them don't use them for distributing the copyrighted materials...

personally I think, keep your contacts close at hand...cuz soon (read: couple years from now) "peer to peer" is gonna be the only way to get stuff, where one peer rips/releases while the other leeches so on and so forth.
Enjoy while thingz last...sad seeing things crumbling after so many years :( |

I agree, they are loosing some money, but the stats have showed that the record sales haven't gone down, but up! And even if they went down, these artists are still getting recognition in countries they never even though of coming over and playing in, and are able to pull out thousands of $$$ from promoters from those countries who are eager and willing to bring them over... And most people, when asked if they download MP3s and if they still purchase CDs/Records, answered yes, in even greater amounts since they can now preview every CD/song before they buy it!
And that's the way it should be too, being able to preview the tracks before throwing money for a CD... If I like the album, I'll buy it, if not, well, that artist better come up with something better and more appealing to me (this also puts pressure on artists to come up with better material, instead of a CD consisting of 3 hit songs and 12 bull ones)... Let me draw a similarity - would you go into a shoe store and purchase a pair of shoes before even trying them on?
Yes, I know that stores are equiped with CD samplers (where you can listen to what you're buying) these days, but most of the stuff I would want to buy I can't find in a regular HMV store, and I have an option of ordering it online only... now I don't really feel like giving up $20 for something I suppose is good.
