I dunno if anyone noticed this before, but why has hardly anyone (not including the ppl who like it iof course)not heard of trance? If you mention to anyone who hasn't gotta clue about dance about drum & bass, happy hardcore etc... and all the old genres that are dying out everyone will have heard of them. But No-body seems to have a clue what trance is and It's probably the most popular certainly the most commercial if dance genres there is. Everyone just refers to trance as dance...maybye it's just me...:conf: :conf:

Same problem in sweden...but almost worse....cause here ppl sometimes connect trance with E-type and all the mainstream ´"dance" music..... :whip: :whip:

it's the worst in the states....

everything is referred to as "techno"

the only popular trance songs are "Better off Alone" and "Sandstorm".

If i asked all the people by me they'd say they knew what trance is but maybe thats my influence! They may not know exactly what it is but hey not even us trancEaddicts can come up wiv a definative definition so atleast they half know what it is. But i make CD's of the very latest tunes for school which they hear everyday so they may have a better idea than some people on here!

Peace :D

You're completely right.
What we call "trance" here on this site, 99% of people around the world call "techno", or "dance". Mostly "techno".

I must admit that before I really got into trance, I, too, thought that a dance tune with synths and a good beat was techno. "Trance" is a relatively little-known term. If you ask a person on the street about "trance," they'll have no idea that you can even DANCE TO IT!! They'll think it's some slow music that puts you in a trance. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The reason for this is that in its early stages trance was indeed slow music; times have changed but the term stuck. Now the word "trance" refers to a completely different style. It mostly refers to the style that has lush melodies and a fast beat.

There's a group of nerds who get really mad when you use "techno" to describe this melodic dance music. They'll say that "techno" is a different genre.

HOWEVER, this distinction is really screwy.
Remember that 99% of the world doesn't think this way.
Most normal people, when they hear Delerium - Silence or Alice Deejay or Ian van Dahl or Armin - Communication, stuff with vocals and melodies and synths, will call that "techno".
And I use that term too. Because I want people to understand me when I talk about something, and I don't want to be a nerd.

People are ignurent of trance here in Ottawa as well. I don't know anyone that likes trance here. When I tell people I like trance music, they assume that I like hard house, techno, disco, ect.

While I like some songs from the above genres, I like TRANCE damnit!

As for the "Better Off Alone" and "Sandstorm", these songs paved the way for me to begin listening to trance. I was only "addicted to trance" per se for just over a year now. :D

Well my mate used to be into trance, around 1999, big suprise, and now garage is popular in this country (blah) he is switching to that, i hate people who follow fashionable music, even if trance died out 2moro, and it was driven under ground, and every hated people who liked it, i would still listen to it. It is the only music that gives me the feeling in side. You know what i mean.

So you can always spot these people. Oh god
