This gun violence is getting ridiculous! (pg. 3)

| I heard on the news a few days ago that someone who used a gun in a violent crime walked away on bail the next day. I don't know much about the criminal code but why aren't they kept in jail or the bail amount set to some exorbitant amount? The cops seem to be doing the best they can but if the law doesn't change to match their efforts I don't see an end to this problem. I really don’t think Miller hiring more cops will solve anything. |

I think a way of helping solve this problem is forcing the police to publish their full (accepted) description of any and all involved. Secondly I think the laws regarding being a member of a gang should change. If you straight out tag a life sentence to any type of public gang related displays (of any kind) I'm certain a number of gangs would take a serious beating in the morale and membership departments. Lastly, perhaps allowing the police the right to summary execution in any situation where a gun is brought out in public by a civilian (ie someone without the right to bear arms in our city, which is everyone but the police).
Ok I lied that wasn't the last point, but my last point is extremely hypothetical. Publish the names of all immediate family members connected to suspects involved in shootings. Yes this does put more innocent people at risk, but I think a lot of people with guns might be loathe to use them if they know their mothers name will show up in the paper right next to theirs. This means not only will their entire family suffer public shame but also their family would be easily targeted by people seeking revenge. Create a scenario of mutually assured destruction. Lots of very polite people in Texas.
A quote from Machiavelli's "The Prince"- To defeat an enemy prince you must eliminate his entire family and anyone who supported him during the conflict. Lest one of them rise up against you in the future. |

| Just because they are family doesn't mean they automatically support the criminals. |

I'm sure it would deter the criminals but it would also violate numerous constitutional rights belonging to both them and their families.
We don't need the death penalty or any other kind of draconian punishments. All we need are proper enforcement of existing laws by our rehab-obsessed judges and less mockery of family values. |

The cops dont help matters when they refuse to release a proper description of the suspect. Oh wait they did today when the crazy dude from alberta escaped a halfway house. He's white according to the news. |

I don't feel right posting about this, because this has effected me personally and is literally happening in my backyard.
I would feel free to talk about this face to face with someone. |

Well hang on a minute Mark... judges *are* appointed in Canada, not elected, and we've had Liberal governments for something like 8 of the past 10 terms, so... doesn't it stand to reason that most of them are, in fact, Liberal appointees?
That doesn't necessarily mean that they're not qualified to be judges, but how can you dispute that they're Liberal or Liberal-friendly? |

Recently I heard that U.S. border patrol which in that past years had seized 1000+ guns had job cut backs, and that last year they only seized somewhere along the lines of 300 guns.
Ponder that one guys.
Judges are not responsible for the release of criminals. Judges have to abide by the laws and it is not their fault that criminals are able to be released because they meet their bail. Furthermore, those convicted of gun possession often have high bail amounts set, but financial support from other gang members facilitate their release often within 24 to 48 hrs.
Moral Hazard has pointed out the same ideas that were discussed tonight at a Jane & Finch community meeting. Unfortunately....discussions can't resolve the immediate problem of safety in our communities. Our next step should be to put into action more necessary police patrols in neighbourhoods that are high at risk. We as a community should demand that more aggressive actions be taken by our local elected politicians. If we don't demand better action, we won't get it. |
