Come on Jay! Give me a break. You run a business - you know how the gig works.
Are media entities (esp. news organizations) now charities? You think they employ 100's "out of the goodness of their heart"?

Most newspapers provide free access to their online versions if you get the paper version. |

I agree with RJ here.
They are still suppling the service, even if you no longer get a physical paper. You were not SOLEY paying for the cost of the paper when you pay to receive it on your doorstep everyday. You are also paying for the news itself and the time and money it costs to have ppl acquire and write it.

1) online advertising pays the bills
2) online newspapers are supposed to be a supplement to the actual hardcopy. The odd days i cant buy a hardcopy i go online. Especially when im out of the country.
And now they expect me to pay $15 a month for that? I have a hard time believing that online papers take away from hardcopy sales. Its just a cash grab.
Thanks anyways. |

Yes, advertising pays the bills, then there is profit to be had. Like somebody charging cover to take care of expenses, and then charging extra on drinks to make a profit. ;)
I like the way Globe sets it up. You can read almost everything for free, and then pay for the extra content if you want. |

I won't pay for globe and mail online, but I certainly won't stop buying the hardcopy paper - the writing and style and viewpoints in the globe are just unparalleled in other local newspapers. Regardless of whether I subscribe or even agree with their online format, I'm still a loyal hardcopy subscriber. |

For someone who's so staunchly capitalist. You certainly want alot provided to you...
I'm all for Online newspapers. I feel if more people buy into it, it'll boom bigger and eventually significantly reduce the amount of hardcopy sales, in turn reducing the clearcutting of forests.

most smart newspapers/magazines will offer you a free section and then a "members only" area..
for example, si.com (sports illustrated) has most of their stuff available for anyone but some good in their "extra" section..
with maxim because i'm a subscriber i get access to their "backroom".. |
