| hardly a surprise. He wasn't the same since coming off that hip sugery, and he was already planning on retiring anyway. Great player, was great to have in a locker room, and was the best professional althlete to interview [aside from maybe charles barkley], and I know I'll miss seeing his crazy puckhandling skills nightly |

The Leafs were going to have to shed some of the old veterans sooner or later anyways; better sooner than later I say.
Might as well do it now, take advantage of the new cap and shed some payroll while you're at it.
Not a bad move in my eyes actually.

Economically it made sense.
Alex was a super-classy guy though and his play-making abilities were phenomenal. On that note, it is sad to see him go.
