Phoenix cancels Hip Hop night in response to violence

After 14 years this night has been cancelled. I remember when it used to be a decent night. Old skool and r and b and a bit of house live on Energy 108. Its gone hardcore in the last few years and brought the thugs because i guess thats what sells now. Well we have seen the results and so has phoenix so they are shutting her down...

Lets hope the media circus concentrates on the TYPE of night it was and doesnt lump all clubs together. I doubt they are that responsible though.

one down, countless more to go!

clubs started deteriorating about 4 years ago when they changed formats and started drawing the scaroborough crowd instead of the downtown/905 crowd. Before that shootings typically happened in Scarborough or rexdale at some crappy hole in the wall. Now the proper clubs are feeling it because of the thug crowds they have turned to for revenue.

its funny, people actually get turned away for looking too 'thug'. So who the hell is getting in with weapons?

whatever...

I'm not gonna say anything about hip hop because if I did I'd be a hypocrite.

Hip Hop doesn't cause shootings the same way Dance Music doesn't cause drug use. It's a choice people make, and they have to deal with the consequences. I just hope that all the people listening to hip hop learn that the glorified 'thug life' is just an image and shouldn't necessarily be reproduced in real life, the same way that when I hear the word 'ecstacy' in a house choon I don't drop a pill.

ahhh but this is where i have to say something. Ive never denied that electronic events have more incidences of drugs than most other venues. Does that music cause people to take drugs? No. But it does tend to draw a lot of the people who do. As does hip hop and violent thugs. Hip hop does not cause violence but it tends to attract those who commit it.

But as i said before, drugs are a personal choice and no one ever got hurt from a drive by pilling. I can choose whether or not I want to take drugs. I cannot choose whether or not I wish to get shot. This is why i can safely be against hip hop nights and not be a hypocrite. If people were shooting each other at electronic events id sooner they pulled the plug on that as well. But obviously this isnt the case.

Hip Hop can be phenomenal when it is done properly. Listen to artists like the Roots, (old) Tribe Called Quest, and even more modern boys Like K-OS. Concious hip hop has groove, soul, and speaks to me the same way that great house does.

It's the bling processed trash that is garbage.

I think the reason that hip hop has the appeal it does today is beause it is easily accessible to youth and is the
"in" music.

The only real "thug" stuff started with gangster rappers like 2pac.

I can't jay....because I can't honestly say that hip hop should be pulled off record store shelves and be banned from being played simply because there's a greater chance that violent thugs show up. If that were true, then who decides what we can or can't listen to, or do? I know I'm taking this to it's logical extreme, but jay you're always against a policed state and governmental interferance, but making a claim like this is just the first step along that path. If you were any other TA, I'd say that your view of dance music is clouding your objectivity towards hip hop as a music, and not as a musical preferance, but I know you better than that.

It's true that people can't 'choose' to be shot, but sometimes people can't 'choose' to do drugs either. I mean, GHB can be a very bad accident waiting to happen if someone picks up the wrong water bottle, but does that mean we should ban dance music?

Furthermore, if you are that uncomfortable with being shot at a hip hop club, choose not to go. If you're shot on the street, then that can't be the fault of hip hop, because that can happen anywhere. Unless of course you want to get into a debate about the social ramifications of hip hop music.

And this is why Planet Vibe at the Phoenix used to be such a great event. They played an intelligent mix of hip hop and old school as well as disco and funk. Just look at the name "planet Vibe"..... hardly what you would call a night of hip hop today. Kind of shows you where hip hop has progressed doesnt it?

Planet Vibe has been an institution for 14 years. Too bad they had to thugafy it and ruin it.

i never said it should be banned. But i do think club owners should think twice before promoting it in their clubs.
