I'll start off by saying what I normally say...
Good Trance:
Trance that doesnt have ty sounding drums and synths. You'll notice that older trance tunes (the ones that people recommend to you here) have really sharp res synths that sound awful.
You might have noticed that new Trance contains really nice smooth synths and people don't seem to be using ty drums anymore.
...not that any of you will ever understand. |
actually, shockingly i agree with you to an extent. not fully i might add, but partially...
many people here praise older trance over new material for it's freshness/creativity/how ahead of their time it was... but back then, drum machines, synths & effects units were much less advanced. if you just judge tracks by a small non-melodic sections, newer trance does sound alot easier on the ear; making fuller use of the frequency/amplitude spectrum, which also reflects better on larger clubsystems. synths also often sound alot less raw & brash, with more subtle use of compression, reverb, delay & EQing. basslines also blend better with the kicks, often thanks to subtle sidechaining/other compression techniques
this is probably all subjective however... and being a (wannabe) producer i probably pick up on technical stuff up more than your average listener. but these days, i often find it harder listening to older tracks (as in pre-98) regardless of how praised they are for their musical superiority, since i've become accustomed to today's production standards. this is also the reason i'm less opposed to 'updates' as most on here... since i often enjoy hearing familiar tunes on an updated backing (though some are needed less than others all the same)
whoop, i'm rambling off topic. digression... |

really I feel kinda bad for you that you didn't experience these wonderful types of tunes when they were emerging (i'm assuming you didn't). at the time this type of sound was so new and the production quality was moving like wild fire. nowadays it's more of a slow trickle.. |
also agree with this. if i hadn't heard system f's 'out of the blue' back in 1998 and you gave me a copy today, i'd probably dismiss it as simplistic, formulaic cheesy trash. however at the time it felt new & fresh and i loved it. and upon hearing it now, it brings back the memories from that time, and i can't help liking it for that reason. one of many examples... |

so andy moor, above and beyond, markus schulz and all the other formulaic ASOT cronies are considered good trance because the technology today is much better than around 1998? push - universal nation had pretty ty sounding synths and drums compared to today's works but its considered an all time classic...why? |

Nicely put
But I too can understand more recent trance-converts not "getting" some of the older tunes. It has so much to do with sentimentality and maybe you heard it in a club on an amazing night when it first came out etc.
Is the music of Beethoven because everything is digital now?
Nope. |

| No seriously. I wonder what MS paintshopped picture you'll come up with next instead of realizing Epic Trance tracks from 1999 aren't classic. Many multitudes I guess. |

I'm loving everybodies input on this (yes, even the negative input from the people that hate my guts)

Thank you :)
and no, isoterra you werent going too far off topic. It's good that we're discussing this in a civilised way ;)
and djmetatron, I actually do have a whole bunch of oldies sitting on my hard drive. And I like the melodies. I really wish that they would remake tracks like "Kamaya Painters - far from over", etc...
And yes, I do enjoy listening to the oldies to some extent.
