The only way one of them men can know for sure what colour their own mark is, is if they can see a red and blue mark on the people sat opposite. Then he knows his own mark MUST be red.

Since all the men are supposedly clever the man who stood up would have expected one of the other 2 men to realise the above fact fairly quickly. Neither of them guessed so he knows that neither of them can see the red/blue combination and since there are at least 2 red marks in total his own mark cannot be blue. So he guesses correctly that his own mark is red.

I think that makes sense

So, the guy that stood up - his dot is red and he can see red/blue dot...

This means that the guy with the blue spot can see two red spots - so he can't decide anything because he may have a blue or a red spot

But surely the other guy who has a red spot can see a red and blue spot? That means that, due to the logic in the quote, he must have a red spot (at least 2 red spots) So why didn't he say something?

edit: oops, skipped half the thread and didn't read CraveTheRave's thread... but yeah - same sentiments as him

No. If he could see red/blue on the other 2 then he would stand up straight away and declare that his own colour is red.

No. If any of them had a blue spot on his head the other two people would know their own colour is red and stand up straight away and declare that their spot is red.

Since none of them stood up straight away, the guy that stood up after a delay realised that they all must have red spots.

Get me? Sorry it's hard to explain

Draw a picture using MSPaint. a picture is worth a thousand words.
Grrrrr
Ok i'll try again with the help from MS paint

The problem:

quote:
Three intelligent professors are called into a room. They are each given a mark on their foreheads that is either red or blue. They are then told that at least two of them have a red mark on their forehead. Then they are asked to guess what color the mark on their head is.

Several minutes passed, and no one answered. Then, one professor stood up and revealed the answer. He was correct.

What did he say and why?

The solution:

Ok the picture shows every possible combination of colours. There is never more than 1 blue because there has to be a minimum of 2 reds.

If combination1 occurs
2&3 will both be able to see a blue spot, so they realise very quickly that thier own colour must be red (for there to be at least 2 reds in total) and stand up declaring their own colour to be red

If combination2 occurs
1&3 will both be able to see a blue spot, so they realise very quickly that thier own colour must be red (for there to be at least 2 reds in total) and stand up declaring their own colour to be red

If combination3 occurs
1&2 will both be able to see a blue spot, so they realise very quickly that thier own colour must be red (for there to be at least 2 reds in total) and stand up declaring their own colour to be red

Since no one stands up very quickly declaring their own colour, one particularly clever chap realises that combination 4 must have occured and as such stands up confidently knowing his own colour is red

Now i'm sure that made sense :D
Sunsnail
it did actually
Mebot
hahaha thats awesome, i was just being stupid when i said that...

but hey it worked so good job!
Nabistai
Draw the cake! :p
Sunsnail
ok looking at the cake from above

you cut it twice... the cut lines make an X

then, looking from the side, you cut straight across, making two layers of 4 slices

:D

red, blue and green are the 3 cuts you make. Sunsnail described it about as well as you can do
Subey
I am so very pleased that is can be easier to express things visually than verbally. :D
