what the hell is IDM?

| seriously, what is this ? i recently looked (on discogs) at cd i have from about 1995 and it said that it was IDM. i don't recall reading IDM anywhere when i bought it in 1995. this is some f'n marketing ploy right? this IDM tag sounds like some emo crap. how the hell is it defined? |

| when i think IDM...i think aphex twin and related artists. as far as i know it's always been known as IDM because of the intricacies in the production, but i dunno really where it came from... |

i've always thought of it as dance music that breaks boundaries and isn't restrained by typical constraints associated with regular edm, where the artists approach things from a wider perspective & seek to make their work sound as original & different as possible.
i have little interest in it though, tbh. |

i recall listening to 'electronic music' because it was music that was electronic and encompassed all different types of electronic music. now it's 'electronica'? or is that passe now too? i digress. |

I think the most common apparition for it is as an experimental type jungle. As FF said, Aphex Twin, along with Squarepusher, µ-ziq, autechre and others.
Ive been in a major IDM mood lately, exploring alot of the warp an other catalog. I do like it alot.
