People, Australia is certainly the worst country when it comes down to Knowledge of what the difference is between techno dance and Trance and sometimes it can get really annoying, for example at school many students listen to trance and only trance but they dont know that it is actually Trance and they refer to it as techno or dance, if ppl ask me what music i like i say trance, they say "oh yes" but really they have no clue what im talking about. It just makes me so made when they refer Trance as techno or dance, because when i say i listen to trance they say or thats crap techno is much better! What the hell! U can understand how that would piss me off or any1 who knows the real meaning of TRance. Trance is surely the Best and Biggest Genre and i beleive it should be given much more Credit!

Ah, another Victorian. Nice. :)

Yeah, I do kinda know what you mean, but the situation in Melbourne's gonna be a lot better than it is in other parts of the world (or even other parts of Australia). At least we have a decent enough club scene and I think that electronic music is more popular now than it ever has been down here. At least people have heard of tracks like Rapture and Hide U, and I'd rather they listen to this sort of stuff and call it dance than to have them listening to that r'n'b stuff that's polluting the airwaves world-wide at the moment.

I have a couple of good friends heavily into electronic music just like myself (though, like me, they're more into the progressive/housey sound than the trance sound - one of them is even a drum 'n' bass guru) and I'm slowly training the rest to differentiate between the different genres of electronica and have them tell me what they like - and house music seems to come up trumps every time.

Anyway, I think the scene in Melbourne is far stronger than those anywhere else in Australia (probably even the southern hemisphere - just check out www.thescene.com.au to see what I'm talking about) so just remember, as much as these "yeah-I-like-dance-music-too-especially-Alice-Deejay" type people piss me off, you've got to remember that it could be a lot worse.

Good luck with spreading the good word anyway. :)

i think every country is bad for real trance except for holland.

don't feel bad. NO ONE knows what trance is in NC, USA.

Even in the UK, a lot of people dont no. It was an underground thing, not like pop. But i think it is hard to define any genre anyway. I think this genre thing is crap, trance is trance. That is all you need to know

The worst is certainly France!
PvD has never come in this f***ing country which only knows House & hardcore!!! :whip: :whip: :whip:

at least people NOT from the US get to see good DJs. In Minnesota there are NEVER any good shows. Even when Oaky or, oh wait, hes the only good DJ to grace our great state, anyways, when he comes he dosnt even try to lay down a sweet set because he knows that people dont know what the hell is going on. I went to Area:One this summer, a kinda rip-off rave thing, anyways, he spun and i dont think I heard ANY mixing, just transitions from weak trance songs to old house songs. He played Prodigy just to humor our non-techno loving culture. It sucks. Carl Cox, however, was ing amazing, he was having so much fun, i think the guy had sweat like 20 gallons by the time he was done! Anyways, back to the point of this thread, here in the US in most parts other than NY and FL people classify electronic music as one thing: Techno. All I hear is pop, r&b and rap. You are lucky that people can differentiate between ANY types of electronic music and that "genres or electronoic" are commion knowledge.

I totally understand what you mean. I go to school in Manhattan, Columbia University to be exact. But hardly anyone where listens to trance...they don't even know what it is. I recently started being the trance DJ at my college's radio station and people ask me what I play...I say TRANCE BABY and their faces take on this confused look and thats when they ask, "Oh...what's that?" AHHH makes me mad. *DOH* So I try to explain and its usually followed by the usually, "OH ic...thats cool." NO that isn't cool you idiot! You don't know what I'm talking about, and you don't even care do you?? Oops hehe sorry I'm venting. This has been bothering me for awhile. Trance really doesn't get the attention it deserves...such a shame.

Damn....I definately feel prevledged then...to be in one of the epicenters of such a great gendre of music; Toronto, Canada!
We have a slightly different twist on that same problem.
Through commercialisation (movies/tv/radio) is almost seems like a mute point to ask because people are convinced that that type of music IS trance....*sigh*
Well...yes....and no.....
Daytime radio stations here (especially the dance ones) like to play the top cheeze trance songs during the day and it drives me up the wall because it's this type of music people now associate all type of trance to be. ARG!!
They do get a lot better at nite during the weekends when a lot of underground goodies start coming out but how many of those people that listen to the radio durin the weekday are listening on a Fri./Sat. nite at >1am??
Ah well....at least we HAVE that problem and I guess I shouldn't be sorry that we do.
After reading what some of you guys have been typin', I'm LUCKY!!!
WOOO!!
