I think I'll have to disagree with you on that one. It's possible to listen to a "large spectrum of EDM" without listening to Armin and Tiesto you know.....

totally agree.

i think most of the "haters" around here do listen to a lot of genres and that's why we are supposedly haters...it's because we try and get people to branch out from just ASOT or something like that.

look at the lists in this thread...hardly anyone listed the same songs, which i think is awesome...

now go look in a top 10 thread or something like that and seriously everyone lists a combination of the same 20 songs that armin has played on ASOT the last month or two...it's retarded...

Some good tunes! Obviously a huge style difference than what is played by popular trance DJs but some tunes could fit in their sets. Overall ,however, I think the majority listen to tech and house progressive with some psy influences. Im not going to say it is better because there is a huge style difference and even genre difference at times.

If you wanted to know I listen to both sides. I love Zabiela, John Flemming, PvD, Armin, Sasha, and Tiesto. I must be one of the few that listen to a large spectrum of EDM. I do admit that I only spend probably two hours or so a week looking at new tunes and reading information on the scene so my knowledge base and lack of music might be a reason why I listen to different genres that seem to hate each other.

Sadly, I think you are incorrect.

If I may use myself as an example, I too listen to a wide range of EDM. In fact, I pretty much listen to all EDM. I'll go through mild stages where I'll dive into a sub-genre for a while, then I may move onto another, than I may return to another, and sometimes I'll just throw on a hodge-podge of everything. However, this does not make me instantly disprove of anything with an inkling of commercialism. I freely admit I'm a big fan of early 90's euro, and still listen to it a fair bit to this day. By the same token, though, I may follow a euro session with a drone ambient session. And my musical tastes don't stop there, as I enjoy much more than just EDM, just not in as high amounts as it since I can only afford so many new albums a month.

If I bash the Tiestin van Corstenfolds of the world, it's not so much their sets (some of which are good and I enjoy) but for what they represent. They are big in small part because of the music they play but in large part because of the massive amounts of promotion that goes into them. These names get trumped up with so much PR, they become celebrities (re: rock stars) and folks end up going to their shows in order to be in the presence of such a celebrity. It becomes less and less about the music and more and more about the person providing the music. As an individual who enjoys music for its own sake, I don't need the glimmer and gloss and Cirque du Soleil-lite extraveganzas to enjoy it when a local 19 year old with a year's worth of experience can churn out just as fine a set as your big name superstar DJs.

I'm sure you'll find many of those who also rag on the popular DJs will agree with this assessment. For the most part, your Tiestos and Armins and whoever are massively in the spotlight but not based on any major musical talent that outshines a legion of others. For folks who enjoy music a great deal, it's bloody criminal. Sadly, it's been that way in the music industry for a long, long time.

If that's not a trance tune then I'm ing Picasso. Just felt like saying that.

Not really...number one it's breakbeat. Just because it doesn't have arpeggiation...arpeggiation is what makes trance trance. I thought you were one of the smart ones. I'd like to see why you think this tune IS trance. No need to rape Picasso.

I wouldn't exactly call those examples a "wide spectrum of EDM".

I rarely agree with you, but this is one of those times.

To me it is a wide spectrum because I dont have the time or money to investigate deeper. In the overall scene it probably isnt a wide spectrum but it is to me.

Good points Sykonee

Does anyone think that it is time and desire issue going on here other than personal taste? Just a thought but maybe the reason why there are so many Armin/Tiesto "whores" is because they dont have the time to delve into other artists and styles of EDM. Because they dont have that time they dont have the desire to listen to things that are different than what they are accustomed to.

I think it is pretty obvious that our popular haters spend a lot of time on music and posting here on TA. Because they have that time and desire to spend that time hearing new tracks that they like and are able to dismiss the tracks and DJs that they dont. They also probably have the opportunity to see the DJs they like more often than others.

So in the end:
Personal Taste = Ignorance Ignorance goes down as the Amount of Time goes up
The more Time Spent the better the personal taste becomes?

I dunno if that is complete BS or if I think it is correct myself but it was just a thought I had.

That's a flawed argument for two reasons:

1. Most of them illegally download (90% of all mislabelled MP3s on this forum are mentioned by trance crackers).
2. Most of them "can't live without trance", and spend hours on this forum talking about the music. Besides, how can you not have time to listen to music?

Ah yes, never passing up an opportunity to pick an argument as usual. Complete with "clever" misinterpretations of my statements. Really, stop being so predictable.

As for your points, I'd play your game if I could be arsed, but I can't. Plus, this thread would go way off topic if I did play along. Thanks for the compliment though.
