Small history of trance By LoginZ :

This is just from my little point of view and design more for the ones who just discovered Trance lately, and for the others who want to share their own experience, and to remind me some great moments i had during this years.
So, feel free to flame, discuss, or whatever, it’s just a personal point of view.

Once upon time, far away in the Galaxy, the trance was born ….

1993 : TRANCE

Trance is something really, really new and upcoming, listened during private parties that happened in sheds with good soundsystems, lights and lasers needed to create the atmosphere, not to confuse these gatherings with the free parties of today.

Those events were called « raves » (about 50 to 400 ppl), at his original sens, normal ppl, i would say gentle ppl, were joining for a night for reaching a state of delerium => Raving and feel this orgasmic thrill, kind of you can feel now in the superfestivals as we know them today.

No need to say that highly prohibited substances were widely available in these gatherings ;).

Here comes some Trance anthems, that were making jump our « ravers », with a common thing the female vocals.

During this period, it had to be exciting, to be horny.

It was a really free sex period, everybody was kewl and open to get into new deep relationship ;) :

Jam & Spoon – Stella Taken from « Tales From A Danceographic Ocean/Stella (1992)».

Jam & Spoon – Follow me with this synth of bee wich is so uplifting. Taken from « Right In The Night (Fall In Love With Music) feat. Plavka (1993)».

O.T Quartet – Hold that sucker down (build like a skyscraper mix Taken from « Hold that sucker down (1994) ».

Humate – Love Stimulation Taken from « X-MIX 1: The MFS Trip (1993) », one of the first albums of PvD.

Vernon’s wonderland - Vernon’s wonderland Taken from Vernon’s wonderland - Vernon’s wonderland (1994) ».

As you should notice, this tunes are sexually hot.

This style is begining to slow down to let on one side the house style take the place, or on the other side the hard trance style, with big festivals as Gathering, Mystery Land in Netherlands where the first industrial, massive parties begun with thousand of ppl. Some clubs are now playing hard trance (le rex in france)…

1995 : HARDTRANCE

The style should be sum up as : faster n’ louder

Some major and essential tunes :

Legend B- Lost in Love Taken from « Legend B - Lost in Love (1995) ».

Cygnus X – Agent orange Taken from « Hypermetrical (1995) ».

Some well known compilations :

RaveMission

TranceMaster

At the same time, the Belgium scene is rising quickly with the label Bonzai Records (both Hard Trance and even trance core (BPM > 150)), which released banging tunes as :

Jones & Stephenson – The first rebirth Taken from « Bonzai records volume I (1994) ».

As you can notice it by hearing this tune, the rythm, the beat is at least sporty and in’ fast, and Bonzai Records compilations have flooded whole Europe and were heavily waited for each new release. A new one each 4 month.

Bonzai Records has produced tunes as :

Dj hitch-hiker & Dj jacques dumont - A new dimension Taken from « Bonzai records volume 5 (1996) ».

Dj franky jones - Overwhelming Rain (Jones & Stephenson Mix) Taken from « Bonzai records volume 4 (1995) ».

Cherrymoon Trax - House of Houses Taken from « Bonzai records volume 6 (1996) ».

Dj dave davis – transfiguration Taken from « Bonzai records volume 4 (1995) ».

Then this label has slow down dramatically, asleeped for few times, this Hardtrance sound had no more disciples in France. The psychedelic trance or « goa » was rising.

1996 : PSY-TRANCE ou GOA

How to define psytrance, well this sound for sure is impressive technically spoken, we are no more listening to a Bontempi keyboard with three poor repetitive sounds which are just speeding and with basic bass.

Here, there is so many sounds coming from everywhere and constituing a harmonious tune, there is much more sounds played together in bass, medium, and treble bands. And here the French scene, with Total Eclipse is well represented in the expansion of this <> sound.

Psycheledic Trance and GOA, why this two terms :

Psycheledic cos’ this trance is really hypnotic and makes you travel, particularly with some hallucinogen substances and bring ravers far, far away in the galaxy… It’s one of the most flyin’ high music that exists on earth.

GOA, it’s the city where many gatherings begun with transcendantal meditation, the zen stuff, etc.

The best Dj « GOA », and by far the best, are from Israël : Astral Projection, Gods, real living gods… The main problem with this style is evolution, there is none…

Some must have GOA :

Lunatic Asylum – The Meltdown
With some samples of the voice of an astronaut…

Hallucinogen - LSD Taken from « Twisted (1995) ».

Astral Projection - Aurora borealis Taken from « Trust In Trance (1996) ».

Astral Projection – People can fly Taken from « Trust In Trance (1996) ».

Astral Projection – Still dreaming Taken from « Trust In Trance (1996) ».

Astral Projection – Dancing galaxy Taken from « Trust In Trance (1996) ».

Just listen to these samples of Dune « The spice extends life, the spice expands consciousness, the spice is vital to space travel » which stick perfectly to the spirit of Goa.

With this tunes of Astral, so unique, I travelled way longer than Pluton… =)

With the next tune, let you bewitch with the sirens of Ulysse :

Transwave - Ulysse Taken from « Distance to GOA Vol 3 (1998) ».

And the French one,

Total eclipse – Le Lotus bleu Taken from « Return to the source Vol 1 (1995) ».

Cos’ this syle never evolved, only true initiates still listen to it, some « mad to this sound » dudes can be met in some parties called GAIA, and @ the boom festival - Portugal each summer.

At these parties, festivals, there is a lot of visuals and so VJ, it’s all involved with the trip of meditation and hypnose. So, you just taste the goa sound, now have your first (or maybe not) hallucinogen experience and check these videos.

I would like so much to get a picture of you looking at this. Yes, yes, this is on earth. I’m laughin’ my ass off thinking of you lookin’ this (Thx to #tranceaddict who just learn me what LMAO means ;)). Straight to your psylocibes, mates…

Hope you enjoy that.

Then, as usual for each style, goa disappeared more or less to let a new scene makes his come back : trance.

1998-99 : THE SACRED TRANCE YEARS

Trance is becoming an essential style and will smash the charts (Mainly never the French ones =(, but European charts,)

Our friend Paul gonna release:

- Seven Ways in 1996 which represents his comeback :

Seven ways

Forbidden fruit

Words

- Vorsprung Dyk Technik 1, 2, 3 in november 1998 a concentrate of pure energy through this triple album, he gonna show all these mixes released during the 92 to 98 with some masters as Brian Transeau , the so called BT, Humate, Binary Finary…

This album is smashing the european charts with For an angel and not the For an angel E-werk mix (But it worth the download to see the rework of mix to make this tune an incredible, amazing tune).

I’ll not expand the thread so much on this part cos’ you should know this part by heart, it’s somehow the TA style.

Some tunes:

Push – Universal Nation

Binary Finary (Gouryella mix) – 1999

Yes, even the year got his own tune…

Planet Perfecto - not over yet 99 (Matt Darey mix)

System F – Out of the blue

Agnelli & Nelson - Everyday

Blank & Jones – Cream

Fragma – Toca me (original mix)

Gouryella – Gouryella

Chicane – Saltwater

The Thrillseekers - Synaesthesia

What to say on this tune, that they are able to quake any dancefloor.

In UK press, year 1999 is considered as the year of Trance, Ibiza clubs are featuring Judge Jules, Scott Bond, Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, DJ Tiesto, DJ Jean, Paul Oakenfold…

It’s a mad, mad summer, outhere… A real madness, it’s furious and i survived it.

October 99, The reference in the musical brit press « MUZIK » crowns our dear PvD giving him the so coveted title of « Best International DJ », sold with a PvD cd « MUZIK 60 minutes mix », a exclusive & rare mix to listen.

Then the Ministry of Sound Magazine gave him the title of « Best international DJ » 1999.

In december 99, Mixmag gives him the consacration : Man Of The Year.

The Gatecrasher with resident dj PvD is voted as « Best Club night ever » by MUZIK..

All this ends by the Gatecrasher 2000 in the Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield for nye y2k.

The biggest NYE Y2K of the planet :

25 000 worldwide clubbers gathered there with a ticket @ 100 £. PvD is playing a set of two hours for 100 000 £.

It’s a massive delerium, 100 000 cokes sold, more than 35 000 Hamburgers eaten. The line-up is incredible : Oakie, Judge Jules, Tall Paul, PvD, Sasha, John Kelly, Matt Hardwirck, Scott Bond… A living hallucination which give a perfect conclusion of two years of immersion and divinisation of Trance.

2000 GC – ARTIST SET TIMES
05.00pm - 07.00pm Matt Hardwick
07.00pm - 09.00pm Sasha (Live on Radio 1)
09.00pm - 10.30pm The Chemical Brothers
10.30pm - 11.55pm Tall Paul Newman
11.55pm - 00.05am The Millennium Moment
00.05am - 01.30am Paul Van Dyk
01.30am - 03.00am Paul Oakenfold
03.00am - 05.00am Judge Jules (Live On Radio 1)
05.00am - 06.30am John Kelly
06.30am - 08.00am Scott Bond

Djs are reaching the statut of stars and their wages too a guy like Judge Jules earns 1 Million £ a year. PvD takes at least 5 000 £ for a gig in a un club, hotel and plane ticket offered.

If only one album should reflect the sound of this years , it would be : MoS – Clubber’s guide to Trance 1, 2

Trance is broadcasted in mainstream in Greatbritain, everywhere, anytime, any programs…

The well known « essential mix » from the BBC - radio 1 of Pete Tong are banging.

The movie Human Traffic is released in 1999 and will be the movie of one generation of clubbers for a long time.

This movie of Justin Kerrigan, shows friends, some weekenders, who are all different socially spoken : family, job, education… who are trying to forget there first 5 days of a week where they are mostly stuck in the middle of nowhere, by clubbing each Saturday night listening to trance, a must see for all those who have not see it yet.

"The weekend has landed.
All that exists now is dubs, drugs, pubs and parties.
I've got 48 hours off from the world, man ...
I'm gonna blow steam out of my head like a screaming kettle.
I'm going to talk to strangers all night.
I'm gonna lose the plot on the dance floor.
The free radicals inside me are freaking, man.
I'm goin' to Never Never Land with my chosen family.
We're gonna get more spaced out then Neil Armstrong ever did. Anything could happen tonight..." – Jip

But the Brit ppl are really too much flooded by this trance, and one new major title gonna give the new upcoming style :

Sasha is voted Best national DJ, and Sasha is a pure of Progressive Trance or House whatever you wanna called this style… (for me Digweed is progressive house, Deep Dish is progressive house, but Sasha is progressive trance ;))

2000 - 2001 : PROGRESSIVE TRANCE AND UPLIFTING TRANCE AND TRANCE COMING TO THE U.S

From 1999 to 2000, the trance, as we love and know it, the trance of clubs and charts gonna still expand.

It just gonna modify to get to the uplifting trance, a trance that makes you high in deep feelings, a trance that makes you thrill, a trance that gives you a perfect sensation of well-being spiritual, much more than this typical trance of 1999, more bangin’, more physical, more in strength in his beat.

This should be sum up by the notion of :

Synesthésie n. f.

Synesthesia is defined as an involuntary physical experience of a cross-modal association. In real language that means that there is a crossing of the senses. Having one sense stimulated would cause a stimulation in another sense as well. This would be like a ringing bell being heard and seen(maybe as a flash of light).
It comes from Greek with syn meaning together and aisthesis, perception. So, literally it is a joining of sensations.

Cf the tune The Thrillseekers - Synaesthesia, hence, sometimes djs gives full meaning to their title.

I think it’s the word that would define best what is uplifting Trance.

In my opinion the dj, which is the more uplifting is Solar Stone, just take a look to all these remix.

Some uplifting tunes :

Solar Stone – Seven cities

Moonman - Galaxia

Delerium – Silence (In search of the sunrise mix)

Pete Lazonby- Sacred cycles

Chicane - Halcyon

Rank 1 - Airwave

Agnelli & Nelson - Embrace

Typical live of Chicane palladium 22-01-2000

When i say "live" i mean a computer, a keyboard, an eletronic drum, a bass, it’s true live but with electronical material, impressive to see this, live.

So, with this tune, we are more as in front of a concert, feeling grace, glowsticks are waving slowly with clubbers ecstasied by the beauty of the sound, some just xtc ;).

The atmosphere in the clubs is really more and more friendly and 2000 will be the year of uplifting and the festival Homelands of 28-05-2000 and the set de PvD personify this style.

Not finished yet, but more to come...
