DivX Codec / AC3 Filter bollocks. In need of a hug and some help.

OK, I need some help from people who actually know what they're doing. :p :p :p
About a week ago Windows Media Player decided it would stop playing the sound from some of my DivX movies. Not all of them, mind, just the odd few. The video works fine still, but there's just no sound.
I tried playing it in the DivX Player, which promptly gave me the error: "You're playing a file that we cant find the audio codec for blah blah blah. I need Audio Tag 8192".
OK, so I installed the AC3 Filter, as that's the codec thing with the audio tag 8192. But still nothing. Not a sausage. So I'm stumped completely. Everything was fine until a week or so ago. I think I tried installing WaveLab or something, and that's when the problems started (I think).
I've got WMP 10, DivX Player 6, and AC3 Filter 1.01. I tried using GSPot, and that tells me that the sound is fine, which is nonsense.
So anyone got any ideas? It's getting on my stark-raving now. :( :( :( :( |

Ohh dude.....this codec can get nasty....your best bet would be un-install all the Divx codecs on your computer, yes, including the Divx codec the WMP uses and then just install the codec required by WMP, check if it works fine and then go ahead and install any other Divx players that you may have.
My friend got into this similar jam and could not do no ....he decicded to go for a clean windows install as he had nothing to loose... :wtf: |

Google...
OggDS and ffdshow and install those things. |

Don't know if you tried that app. But install it, open your divx file and it'll tell you if you have a codec missing and if it needs to install it you'll be able to go to the necessary download site by clicking on the Web icon.
Otherwise your best bet is taking the codecs off and doing a clean reinstall. Might be a big of a mess right now. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm sure something's got to work.
Firstly, I've tried taking everything off. All the codecs, media players, I even uninstalled my sound card, and then put it all on again one by one to see if I could get it working that way, but so far I've had no luck.
I could try installing ffdshow and OggDS, but I always thought it was best to try and keep the codecs intalled to a minimum, incase they cause conflicts with one another. Short of formatting my drive (which I've done recently) I guess that's the only thing to try. I'll try jdat's suggestion too I think.
And I've got VLC media player, which does play the movies with sound, but it's very choppy and out of sync.
We'll see how it goes I guess. :p :p |

OK cheers everyone, it's all sorted now. Well, kinda. I can play the damn things in one player or another now, so I'm happy. As a token of my appreciation, I tell the story of Mittens:
