HDTVs from Best Buy

Hi guys. I was wondering if anyone can help me pick out an HDTV from Best Buy for my parents. They have a 42" Sony XBR rear-projection TV right now which is on its way out. They want to replace it with an HDTV, but they want it from Best Buy (service plan, close enough to their house, delivery, etc). So I'm stuck with whatever Best Buy offers...

That being said, they want to spend around $2500. I know they have looked at a Sony LCD (I assume rear-projection) that was 52" and was around $2,500 and a JVC 57" ILA around the same price. That is all I know...

My question is this... are rear-projection HDTVs the best? It's for the basement, and the room does not need a 57" TV... I think they could do with a 40" probably. Is perhaps a plasma or lcd or even a tube better? What TVs that Best Buy offers are good for aorund that price... if they need to spend another $500 for a better TV I could probably convince them.

I know they're also looking at some surround sound systems, but I'll just let Best Buy recommend that because the room is small enough anyway that it won't really matter what they get.

Thanks!

Panasonic PT-44LCX65
Samsung HLR4667W
Samsung HLR4266W
Sony KDFE42A10

Thats what I recommend looking at. And remember, HDTV Ready does not come with HDTV, you have to buy an HDTV Tuner separately. ;)

^Thanks Vlad. Does anyone know a great site to brush up on HDTV and what to look for?

Before spending all that money on an HDTV, make sure that your cable provider even carries HD programming. I know that sounds stupid but we had an HDTV in our apartment at school but our ty cable provider didn't support HD. If you have Comcast you should be fine though.

Do you already have a surround sound system?

Otherwise in regards to the TV I suggest you take a look at www.avsforum.com

Forum dedicated to anything audiovisual.

If you have a 2500 budget I suggest possibly plasma or tube.
If you get a rear projection TV keep in mind they do require yearly maintenance that can be a bit pricey; someone needing to come out to your house to adjust the tubes, replace liquids, cleanup.

Tube's on the other hand are slowly leaving the market some companies don't even sell them anymore.

In regards to hdtv keep in mind that you may also have to pay extra for it

Be sure when looking for an HDTV, That it has a built in HDTV receiver, So you can receive those over the air HD channels, Otherwise, you would have to buy an HDTV receiver which will cost you about 200 to 300 bucks.

Not all tvs have integrated HDTV tuners and some of them are actually garbage.

If I were to buy a 3000 dollar set today I'd buy a separate HDTV receiver with a high ticket cost.

Very true, Another thing to consider is what kind of connections the HDTV will use, Most use those DVI style plugs or VGA plugs.

VGA is low, DVI is out, HDMI is the new in.

Yeah, HDMI is the new type of plugs, But not all HDTVs have them, Plus you would need to buy a receive with that same type of plug, It's recomended to check if the HDTV receive has plugs for HDMI and VGA on them.
