When you linked an fx vst to the automation envelope to shut it down it sometimes didn't shut it (when you play the track on a few bars after the automation), sometimes distorded (when on values that are not 100% or 0% and when you did a linear automation) and sometimes it just waited a few bars before shutting it down.
So I'll guide you to how to solve this.
I picked up a flanger as the certain effect that I want to turn on/off.
Here is what you should do:
Step 1) Open up the mixer.

Step 2) Create a flanger effect and assign a normal 4x4 kick to the channel (for the example).

Step 3) Go to the on/off button and turn it off.

Step 4) Right click on the on/off button and then click 'Init song with this position'

Step 5) After every other fx that you used on that channel add the Fruity Formula Controller.

Step 6) Open it and write IfE(a, 1) on the formula textbox and click on compile. That means that if a is not 100% up then don't activate the flanger.

Step 7) Right click on a knob and then click 'Init song with this position' but make sure it's down to 0%

Step 8) Right click on a knob and then click 'Create automation clip'

Step 9) Write up the pattren that you want. (example below)

And done :D
This can be made with any fx of course.
Let me know if it works k? (I tried it, but I wanna know what do you think)

wow, making an automation envelope for fx to shut down and turn on is ing hard in fl.
cant you just make an automation envelope for the volume of the flanger and drop it too 0% when you want it off?? |

| i dont understand why you have to use such a diffucult way to get this effect, just automating the on/off button works for me (edit events) |

But what if you don't use the edit events?
What if you want to use the envelope?
I use the envelope only since it's the only thing I need
I rarely use the edit events anymore
Thats why
@DJ Shibby: No Problem, It took me 5 minutes to figure it out :) |

I agree! Same effect can be achieved with much less effort. The formula controller is not needed at all. |

if you want an envelope you can automate the wet/dry knob inside the flanger???? |
|
|
| ronk |
| ......or you can automate the on/off button?? |
|

| It's too easy to get lost in automation. I find it much easier to simply copy/paste a channel, give one a flanger and the other has nothing. |

I won't work, I wrote why.
@Aquarian, Cortez: Whatever works for you man.
