Addiction...what the hell happened???
View this Thread in Original format

The idea for Addiction started out as an event to let TAs and other amateur DJs have a shot at playing a real party. It's nothing against the guys playing in Minneapolis or the people who organized the event (for whom I have tremendous respect for) but this event has gotten away from what Addiction is all about. I know that I'm not the only one that feels this way and I really think that Addiction should remain a grassroots effort to give the TAs a time to shine. Believe me, if I had the time and money to make the trek to Quest at the end of September, I would. But I feel like what me, crrrazydan, and all of the other people that made the first Addiction possible, did has been all but forgotten.

For the record, I'm working on organizing another event at the same place as the first Addiction and giving some talented midwest DJs a chance to show people what they're all about.

The first Addiction was a learning experience, and IMO, it is stll something that was absolutely amazing to come together period. Sure there were issues like too many DJ's, sound and monitors, and so on, but it was still OUR event, and I mean that it belonged to ALL of us, not any one or two of us. A lot of people made major sacrifices to make it to that event, just as some still will for this event on the 30th.

The problem is, that with this event, a lot of things changed, and depending on your viewpoint, this can be a great or terrible thing. I am very, very impressed with Jack Trash and the Minneapolis crew's faith in Tyler, Daniel, and the TA's to come together and pull a night like tonight off. If I'm not mistaken (And I don't think I am) Sound in Motion is taking a HUGE risk by giving up one of their own nights for Addiction 2, and I'm sure the pressure is on both Tyler and Daniel to pull it off. Hence bringing in KT...

KT expressed interest in playing the first Addiction, and straight up, we couldn't afford it, period. The first one thus came off as very much a showcase for TA amateurs, which had a very cool, grassroots feel to it. But I don't think that could happen this time simply based on the logistics of everything. I do not mean to make it sound like the problem lies solely in KT spinning, because that's not it at all, and if anything, he will be a huge part of making this night amazing, BUT, the idea that he expressed interest in playing all but secured his ability to play that night, and that's where I think people get upset. Let's be honest here, a lot of this is about jealousy, and the feeling that a well established quote en quote "globetrotting" DJ is treading on what should feel like "our" territory. But that isn't the way it really is.

This is still "Addiction." Regardless of what people have to say about how this was done, it is for the best, and I have no doubt what so ever that this will come off as a great night. The one thing I think a lot of non-local TA's don't realize about "The Quest" is that it is absolutely mint, and I am absolutely astonished that Tyler and Daniel were able to secure it for the event. I think everyone who isn't playing at the event needs to realize just what kind of pressure these kids are under to make this work. If this comes off as well as I truly believe it will, it is another huge step for both of them, and for TA events in general.
crrrazydan
Yeah, I was going to say something about this. I'm not angry or anything, I just feel like it isnt really "Addiction". I guess I kind of associate the name with letting amateur DJ's have a chance to play at a real event. I mean if you organized the event go ahead and put your set at the peak of the night by all means, but I admit I was disappointed when I found out all the TA's weren't DJ'ing.

Anyway, I would still go if it wasn't 10 hours away, best of luck to you guys. :)
tylerc
Wow, well I hafta say I'm a little surpised, but even more disappointed.

There are several factors that shaped the event to what it is. Firstly, in order to secure any sort of respectable venue, we needed to team with one of the local promo groups. Though the venue for the original Addiction was cool and all, imo it was the first thing that needed to be upgraded. We ended up with a Friday night at the Quest. I'm not sure if anyone is familiar with the Minneapolis scene, but this is THE PREMEIR venue for any sort of electronic music in this area. Ferry Corsten, Darude, George Acosta, and Gabriel & Dresden have all played this venue in the last 6 months, and Armin will be playing it just a few days after Addiction.

The downside to securing this venue and joining with another group was that the hours of the event are completely out of our control. They want to start at 10pm and the venue usually kicks everyone out at 2:30-3:00ish. This leaves 4 solid hours of djs. I think a big problem with Addiction1 was that really only 4 djs played to any sort of crowd. Rob, Andy, myself, and Joe all essentially played to the TAs in attendance and a few straglers. Shortening the event will allow the djs to experience what it's like playing to a real crowd.

I'm still not really sure how this event goes against what Addiction stood for. Granted we had assistance in obtaining a venue, but that aside - it's still 4 djs who post on the Midwest section of TA getting together and having a ing blast. Additionally, we have a pretty solid afterparty coming together, which will feature more TAs. I'm not going to be any more specific, as the details are still coming together. Unfortunately, since you guys won't be attending, these details are trivial to you anyway.

I understand that in the days of high gas prices, making this trip may be expensive; but there were a number of us who drove 5-10 hours, payed for a hotel and drove home the next day last time. I'm more than willing to offer places to stay for those who make trip, but if your minds are made up, sobeit.

I'm not going to sit here and try to twist your arm to come check out our event. But I'm also not going to sit here and allow people to question our motives for this event. This is all done in the same spirit of the original Addicition, just on a larger scale in a much larger city. It's a totally different ballgame here; a haphazard event in a warehouse with no real headliner to speak of will garner absolutely no credibility in these parts. If something succeeds here, it succeeds big, and if it fails, it fails big. It's a shame you guys don't want to be a part of it.

The venue was really our only option in this town with Indiana requiring club/bar goers to be 21+. After contacting SEVERAL places in town and looking around Indy even, the previous venue was our last option. Frankly, I was happy with the underground feel that it had once we got all of the lights and music going.

This has already been discussed at length and is already a consideration for the next event.

Kenneth Thomas and DJ Lane are recognized professionals. Several other famous DJ/producers post on these forums. Also, last time, none of the DJs were paid. Had there been any real profit from the last event, we would have gladly shared with everyone involved to help offset the cost of making the trip down. This had also been discussed at great length. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of KT, but that doesn't change the fact that he's a professional DJ/producer and is being paid to play in Minneapolis (correct me if I'm wrong).

With gas at $2.99/gallon and 6 classes on Friday, making a 10 hour drive to Minneapolis simply isn't feasible. Gas prices are up about 40% from the time of the last event. Even if I did have the money, I wouldn't be able to leave town until about 6:00pm, putting me about half way there by the time the first DJ hits the decks. If the event was on a Saturday, I'd find a way to make it up dispite the money situation.

Honestly, it's even more difficult here with almost no scene to speak of. Oakenfold and Hernan Cattaneo played in Indianapolis a couple months ago but before that it was Sasha & Digweed back in 2000 I believe (don't quote me on that).

Chill out kids... Everything is A-O-K...

I feel like I need to comment more on this, but I don't have the time to say everything I want to ATM so it'll have to wait til later, but for now I'll just say this...

Chris & Dan, I totally understand everything you're saying man, and you and I have had this discussion already... This is a different event, and it is sad to see it become something that is, definitely, a 180 degree turn from the original... but things change and evolve, and this is just one of those I guess...

Charley and the other Dan (;)) have put a lot of effort into pulling this off in the best possible way they can, and they've accomplished a lot... And whether you see it as fortunate or unfortunate, I think it was accomplished in the same spirit that the original was...

I'll be back with more later...

Peace, Cheers,

Rob

PS: Just because I've gotta post it somewhere... I killed it on Saturday night this week... "Lick My Deck" pwns the dancefloor... :toocool:

I'm not trying to burn any bridges here. I'd definitely be there if it were possible (Rob can back me up on this).

...and your face! :whip:
Daniel K
extremely dissapointed....

...

I am most thankful for JT putting his ass on the line for letting a few midwest TA's take over his premier night

and

When KT came to ME and expressed interest in what was being put together, I couldn't pass it up. I feel this event remains in the essence of what addiction is all about...(correct me if I am wrong) but this is a substantial event for DJ Lane too.

DJ like KT along with several amatuer DJ's + Group of people from across the midwest who express their love for dance music day after day in the same community + a premier venue in a major city = I personally have not seen anything of it's kind

I'd like to say that you, Chris, would not shy away support from a bigger DJ...

but i refuse to go on with this petty thread and wish it to be closed for it greatly degrades the midwest forum
Aristronica
all i have to say -

it's difficult to agree with any of you. those that didn't make "the cut" are bitching and moaning, and those that are DJing the event are covering their asses.

This is my point. Daniel, KT, etc. go ahead and have your event. it is obviously too late to strip the event of its name because of all the promotion that's already been done. however there might be some sense in the future to discuss your plans with everyone.

what was promised - 4 rooms or something with plenty of chance for DJs (crowd or no crowd) - was not was was received and that's my only beef with you guys. no one gave updates but all of a sudden we had an Addiction that did not coincide with what was originally discussed on these boards.

later.

Right now I’m planning on making it to Quest, regardless of if there’s an afterparty for more TAs to spin at or not, as I’d like to hear the 4 TAs who will be spinning and to see some of the other TAs. I see where Chris is coming from and appreciate all the work that him, Dan and a lot of others put into the 1st event and to allow a lot of us from TA opportunities to spin, but I understand that Daniel & Charley put lots of effort into getting a good venue and that inhibits the ability to add more people to the roster. Congratulations Charley on all your success by the way.

I’m up for anything at anytime and will hopefully be able to record a new demo soon when I get a new computer. The owner of the firm I work at is part owner of a real classy lounge and I’m trying to convince him on letting us have an event, but it’s difficult to get something set up there on a Friday or Saturday, mainly because we’d have to guarantee really good turnout. If I can get an open date, there’s a downstairs bar where I think we can set up a table and an extra set of TTs so there’d be at least 6-8 slots. If anyone has any other venue options in IL or has any input please let me know. I know I've briefly discussed this with a few Chicago TAs and I'm up for moving forward on making this happen.

Alright... this is getting ridiculous... The finger pointing and accusations being made in this thread shouldn't even come close to happening, and it irritates me even more to think that this argument is pitting people who came together to pull something amazing off this past Spring against each other...

The first Addiction was a learning experience, and IMO, it is stll something that was absolutely amazing to come together period. Sure there were issues like too many DJ's, sound and monitors, and so on, but it was still OUR event, and I mean that it belonged to ALL of us, not any one or two of us. So please, I guess all I'm asking here is for some understanding... The coolest thing about the Addiction crew is that, IMO, we've been there for each other. We've been all about supporting each other as we grow as artists and performers, and I truly feel like some of the people I met because of that show are truly going to be lifelong friends. Come on, I'm going to Above and Beyond with Chris this weekend, heading to Addiction in a couple weeks, and a few weeks after that (Well, I guess here's the announcement!) Lucas, Tyler, and myself are all playing together he in Point! All I'm trying to say is that I still really love all you kids, and I'm stoked to bring a few new ones into the Addiction fold, so KT and Lane, welcome to our dysfunctional family!

Peace,

Rob

PS: Hey KT, check your PM's at some point...

Lets all hug and be friends.... I dont think Chris meant to start all this turmoil by stating his feelings. I respect and understand where both "sides" are coming from with this. I would make it up to the event but the Purdue vs. Notre Dame football game is the next day and I CAN'T miss this. LoL. I think maybe a different name for the event in Minneapolis might have made things different because "Addiction" was the name that Chris used for the first event and wanted that name to go along with a series of events that he is promoting. I dont know. Just a thought. I dont think anyone should take any of the stuff in this thread personal because after all, it is just an online forum. Hope all is well for everyone....:p
