house - hard repititous beats, usually to a club style.
drum & bass - exactly what it says.
techno - all encompassing digitally created music.
trance - laid back "dreamy" id call it form of techno.
the important thing is this.
any song can have house parts, trancy parts, beat parts.
usually no one song can be descibed under one genre.

It's a melody and emotion driven form of EDM that follows a strict structure and set of keys, borrows many elements of techno, but keeps a classical-style melodic structure, and is characterized by smooth transitions between elements.
Another way of defining it would be of comparing it to similar genres that aren't trance. For example: Techno is colder, more neutral, and more abstract. House is more groove-oriented, usually more repetitive, and far less melodic. |

Well you see, Trance is like the form of EDM thats supposed to put you into a trance like state where by your not really aware of time, space, yourself or your surroundings. OK, fair enough...
...but...
...somehow these dutch guys got ahold of the concept and turned it into this really loud pounding kickdrum thing with girls singing and stuff and this really long bit where nothing happens so even if you were in a trance to begin with, you've been snapped right out of it by the sudden silence.
but , who knows how the subconscious of a dutchman works. Maybe it's sending them straight to the gates or Nirvana which is probably why they all have such strange looking heads come to think of it... :conf: |

i'm not going to try to define it, but here's some examples of the genres..
trance - listen to paul van dyk
house - depending on the genre, try Eric Morillo, bad boy bill, mark farina
techno - mauro picotto or laurent garnier, carl cox on occasion
drum and bass - dj rap, andy c, or roni size
breaks - adam freeland, evil nine, plump dj's
you'll hear the difference after listening to it for a while. but there's so many different types and subgenres of EDM, it's hard to define any of them. that's why all the elitists who posted ^above are talking :stongue: |

Well me ol' friend...I've been there , and I have been through it all and I compose music from all the genres you pointed to ... well I suggest you listen to DJ Tiesto as a definition of what trance is , try to figure out what all the music share , and you may try people like BT as a definition of Techno , and for any further clarifications , I will be glad to reply ...

| As far as I'm aware Trance used to be more like goa trance initially, the earliest trance songs weren't anything like the trance today - with the supersaws and the breakdown-buildup formula - either this is how trance has evolved, or it isn't actually trance music:( |
